An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. I believe it. Earlier I was watching some of the eyewitness videos and listening to the lady doing an NPR taping in a church; I can’t imagine having the ground roll for that long.

This is sad and I can’t believe how mean some of our comrades are being. Can you imagine being buried under concrete waiting for help. These 1000 are children.
a little more on the chemical leak...
Up to 5,000 people have been killed in one district, Beichuan, where 80 per cent of buildings collapsed, according to Xinhua.
“Several thousand” were reported killed or buried in the nearby town of Hanwang after a factory collapsed, while over 600 people died and 2,300 were buried in Shifang city where there was a major chemical leak.
More than 18 hours after the quake struck, there was still little news out of Wenchuan county, a poor mountainous region of around 112,000 people situated in the epicentre.

All: if you have pix to post please use a free image server to hold them and link to FR from there. Photobucket is the one I use but there are a number of good ones. If somebody does decide to try to censor these on the Chinese side we'll still have them out there.
Call me paranoid... ;-)
Sometimes there is just too much heartbreak in the world.
Thanks RightWhale, for that plug. Someone at work said the death toll has topped 9,000, with at least 40,000 missing. Later topic:

I thought I’d read that earlier. Thank you.
Why bring up Mexicans? You don't like Mexicans? It's not about language, it's content.
I believe you are right, that is the school with the 900 children and the staircase for the school is on the other side of the chalk boards. It was the only section that was left standing of the school.
the 1,000 children killed are at different school in Beichuan I believe.
Your in a hole,,,keep digging!
For the love of Pete, would you just *please* stop making yourself look like an insensitive cad?
