The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).

Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.

And why would the censor news coverage of an earthquake? I've been watching it on TV all day. If you see a reporter being pushed away it is for the same reason as here...

Right, same as here. Same as here? Right.

The Chinese government has repeatedly taken friendly overtures from us as a sign of weakness and an opportunity to steal our technology to use against us. You may not be used to hearing things critical of your government, but the fact is they have repeatedly lied to us and that tends to make relations difficult with the Chinese people for some.

At the moment, this is really not about the Chinese government. It's about human beings trapped under collapsed buildings, and rubble. Even if the new FR sign ups today are government agents by some weird but possible circumstance, it doesn't lessen my words or hopes to the people that are suffering and dying there right now.

China quake kills nearly 10,000 in Sichuan province
http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/feedarticle/7513452

* Death toll rises to nearly 10,000 in Sichuan province
* 80 percent of buildings toppled in one Sichuan county
* Worst-hit Wenchuan county cut off from rescuers; no word from three townships nearest epicentre
* Over 1,000 buried under chemical plants, schools, offices

About 900 teenagers were buried under a three-storey school building in the Sichuan city of Dujiangyan. Premier Wen Jiabao, who rushed there, bowed three times in grief before some of the 50 bodies already pulled out, Xinhua news agency reported.
Xinhua said at another Dujiangyan school 420 students were trapped and workers had so far been able to rescue less than 100.
“Not one minute can be wasted,” Wen said. “One minute, one second could mean a child’s life.”

Chinese disaster relief troops approaching earthquake epicenter on foot

2008-05-13 06:21:24

BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) — Relief troops are approaching Wenchuan County on foot, the epicenter of a quake that jolted southwest China’s Sichuan Province Monday afternoon.

The authority has not given a specific number of the rescuing troops approaching the epicenter, but about 100 officers of the armed police forces advancing to Wenchuan on foot has been accessed via satellite phone.

Li Zaiyuan, head of the unit, told that there was only 70 kilometers toward their destination.

Setting out from Maerkang at 20:00 on Monday, about 200 kilometers away from Wenchuan, the unit has walked for nearly seven hours on foot and met a number of aftershocks and sliding rocks in heavy rains.

“I have seen many collapsed civilian houses and the rocks dropped from mountains on the roadside are everywhere,” said the unit head, “We are on the way on foot.”

The epicenter of the quake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, is located 31 degrees north latitude and 103.4 degrees east longitude.

The road from Dujiangyan, a city northwest of the provincial capital Chengdu, to Wenchuan was blocked by rock and mud slides, holding up rescue, medical and other disaster relief teams, a witness said via mobile phone.

Premier Wen Jiabao asked military personnel waiting in the city to enter the area as soon as possible even if they had to walk to Wenchuan.

The earlier the troops arrived, the more lives they could save, he said.

Wen pledged that the military will provide as many soldiers and officers as the quake relief work needs to save trapped people.

So far the People’s Liberation Army and the Armed Police Forces have mobilized more than 20,000 personnel.

Another 20,000 airborne troops will be dropped to the areas and 10,000 will take railways to join the quake relievers. More than 3,000 police officers will also be dispatched.

In addition, two heavy aerotransports fully loaded with medical equipment and disaster relieving experts have arrived at an airport on the outskirt of Chengdu. They will take military trucks heading for Wenchuan.

I’d suspect Bilham is probably right. He correctly called the massive death toll from the Pakistan quake, IIRC.

He’s noted the potential for an M9 Himalayan quake to kill upwards of a million people in India.

Right, same as here. Same as here? Right.

Not exactly the same as here. Don't go off the deep end. The same as any pushy reporter getting in the way when the emergency crews are trying to deal ith an emergency.

OK, not quite the same as here. The U.S. journalists are more pushy.

Sichuan quake death toll rises to nearly 10,000

2008-05-13 06:41:34

CHENGDU, May 13 (Xinhua) — The death toll from Monday’s earthquake in southwest China’s Sichuan Province has climbed to nearly 10,000, according to the headquarters for disaster relief.

The figure climbed from more than 8,500 provided earlier Monday night by local authorities.

The Sichuan provincial seismological bureau said more than 1,180 tremors up to six magnitude have been recorded as of 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

Government in Shifang City of Deyang City, where a major chemical leak happened after the quake, said about 600 people died, including 81 students. As many as 2,300 people are still buried, in which 920 are students.

In Anxian County of Mianyang City, about 500 people died, and 85 percent of the houses in rural areas collapsed.

Dozens of military vehicles are heading to Beichuan County, where officials said about 80 percent of the buildings collapsed.

Escaped villagers said the old town of Beichuan was tightly covered by giant swaths of debris slides, and the new town also suffered grave damages, particularly kindergartens, primary and middle schools, and vocational schools.

The rescuers were stranded about 10 kilometers from the county.

Rocks slid down the mountains and piled upon boulders the size of a house which already jammed up the road sections.

Local villagers said the rocks came down in scary roaring noises when the quake occurred. They warned that it was very dangerous to move ahead, as the rock slides could push the vehicles down the hill and straight into a river that runs in the valley.
