An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).
Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.
I just knew this forum from somebody who mantioned that people outside discusing the quake, so i visit and join the forum. no matter you believe or not, i am just an editoer, not any kind of agent, and i live in Chengdu City, where aroud the quake center.
i experienced the quake this noon, it was terrible. people got out from buildings and full of the sreets, all communication down except internet.
when i typing this message, quake is still happenning, i do not know if i should get out and stay in the squre around.
so, please do not take every new ID from China as agent. common Chinese know how to connect the world.
Ok.. I just want you all to know that I’ll welcome you to the FR. Hope someday, all Chinese can have the freedom to criticize their GOVERNMENT - like we can. (Except when McCain-Feingold is in affect!)

It is good to have similar professions. It makes us understand one another’s concerns and responsibilities.
Actually I myself is a little surprised that FR is not banned by GFW. But even if it is banned, it’s not difficult to do some tricks and get access to this site.
Anyway, I don’t see the point of arguing I am an agent or not.

It is true that the television, newspapers, and radios are government controlled and let people see and hear only what the government wants them to. I don't speak Chinese, but I did watch the English TV channel in China, and it had programs on Chinese culture, and some news programs praising the Chinese economy. Very much pro-China and pro-Chinese government propaganda (as opposed the the anti-US propaganda we get here).
China used to ban Chinese-language websites originating from outside the country (like WenXueCity), but have recently relented, and some of these are available inside the country now. They have been loosening up a bit.
FreeRepublic was not banned when I was there in 2006 nor in 2004.
Ok, I’m surprised! I thought they would ban this site, but maybe - they didn’t since some of us are critical of the US on here.
I guess I don’t understand why people near the quake would want to be on FR right now.
If there were a major disaster here in the US, and I’m very near to it, I’m not going to go on a China thread to discuss it.
which is because we like to shop at Wal*Mart and Target, so companies can't make things (like shoes, appliances, toys or electronics.) here.

hope that all those whom you love are safe. I live near a big
fault, the New Madrid fault, in the USA, and when we have a
small earthquake, I wonder when the big one will come.
