One of the thing I keep reading here on Free Republic is that a lot of conservatives are under the belief that if we get fours of Senator Obama or Senator Clinton that the American public would become so shocked and disgusted that they will be tripping over themselves in 2012 to elect a "true conservative" candidate. I have some issues with Senator McCain, however that's not the point here.
Lets look at the last 40 years. Only two presidential incumbents have lost their bid for re-election excluding President Ford. Ford was a special case, serving out the remainder of President Nixon's term. Even if you consider the 1976 election, the 1976 election came down to single county in Ohio despite all of the Ford's baggage. In fact we had two elections, where one of the candidate, the Vice-President, won extending the term of a two-term President (1988) and another election (2000) where another candidate, the Vice-President lost getting the majority of the popular vote, almost extended the term of the President. So it isn't easy unseating the President.
In 1992, the incumbent lost because the conservative vote was split.
Let's look at the 1980. In hindsight, it appears that Reagan blew out Carter. Governor Reagan soundly defeated President Carter in electoral college vote, however Reagan only receive 52% of the popular vote; Carter got 40%. Obviously the liberal vote was split by Congressman John Anderson. But what some people don't remember is that despite of Iran, the Soviets invasion of Afghanistan, stagflation, double digit interest rates, Billy Carter's Libyan fiasco, and the split at the democratic convention; the 1980 election was not decided until the final weekend before the election.
Some people say we can survive 4 years of Hilabama because we "survived" four years of Carter and 8 years of Bill Clinton. Four years of Carter got us 29 years of an Islamic Republic in Iran and 8 years of Clinton gave us the rise of Al Qaeda.
If Hilabama is elected, they will go to great lengths ensuring that they will never be out of power. They will leave no dime unspent in their pursuit of unabated democrat rule.
Your vote is your business. Just get all of the facts and be prepared to be disappointed.
Wow, you are very convincing. I can’t see how anyone could not vote for McCain after you put forth reasoning like that. McCain should hire you and send you around the country to make his case.
Perdogg, you are a McCain shill. McCain will get us 40 years of democrats.
Gawd, how pathetic. No spine, weak and sad.
You are right on the money with that. McCain is not my choice for the Republican Presidential candidate either. However, if conservatives stay home this Nov. and let either Hillary or Obama become President this may very well be what will happen to the Republican Party.
Where will conservative voters go then? Form a Third Party rather than fight to change the Republican Party from within?
Yes, we can start a third party but it won't be viable in any our lifetimes. It could very well take 50 to 60 years to form a political party strong enough to overtake the Democrat Party.
Those that would rather have Obama or Hillary win than to support McCain this election are fooling themselves. We will not bounce back with a true conservative in 4 yr, 8 yr or even 16 yrs.
Let me give you a little political history of the Indiana county that I live in. This county was once considered a Republican county. Then there was infighting that split the Republican Party. One faction became Democrats and the other faction remained Republican. For many elections the Republican candidates for county offices were competitive and held their share of county offices. It was so into the 1960's when Republican Party officials, women's groups and other factions started nitpicking every flaw in their office holders and candidates. Democrats in the county had no such qualms regarding their candidates. Much like the national Democrat Party has today.
It became more difficult to elect a Republican candidate to any office in the county. Since the 1960's, as best I can remember, we have elected 2 sheriffs, 1 county judge, 1 county commissioner 1 mayor, a county recorder and a few town board members.
Right now the Democrats control every county and city office in this county except for one (1). And, the prospects of electing a Republican to any office in this county is practically zero. Republicans are out registered by 5 to 1 by Democrats and most Independent voters tend to vote for Democrats. We can no longer get Republicans to run for office in this county because of certain defeat.
Vote as you like this November or don't vote at all it's everyone's choice. But, don't fool yourself or let anyone else fool you into to thinking a defeat to the Democrats in November will spring forth another Ronald Reagan as savior of the Republican Party and renewed influence of conservatives in 4 to 8 years. It isn't going to happen. The party of Reagan and conservative voters may never recover.
Holding my nose is better than cuting off my nose to spite my face!
This post (<-click), while addressing taxes, helps to explain why Clinton and constitutional "expert" Obama are actually in contempt of the Constitution that they have sworn to defend, foolishly following in the footsteps of FDR's dirty federal spending politics. In fact, the article referenced below shows that Obama is the #1 federal spending proposer in the Senate for '08; Clinton is #2.
Obama and Clinton, big-shot federal spendersThe people need to reconnect with the Founder's division of federal and state government powers. The people then need to wise up to the major problem that the federal government is not operating within the restraints of the federal Constitution, particularly where constitutionally unauthorized federal spending is concerned.
The bottom line is that the people need to send big-shot federal spenders like Obama and Clinton home as opposed to trying to send people like them to the Oval Office. The people really need to get in the faces of the feds, demanding a stop to constitutionally unauthorized federal spending while appropriately lowering federal taxes.
Thanks for correcting my spelling... have a good life.
The Republican party did not exist until the 1850's. From the RNC website:
The first official Republican meeting took place on July 6th, 1854 in Jackson, Michigan.
[...]
In 1856, the Republicans became a national party when John C. Fremont was nominated for President under the slogan: "Free soil, free labor, free speech, free men, Fremont."
Jefferson’s party was called the Democrat-Republican Party.
Regardless of his party, he was one of our greatest presidents.

Add to their anti-defense Presidencies the anti-defense pro-socialist Congress of Pelosi and Reid and it could go beyond very bad. Visualize FDR’s New Deal Programs taken to an extreme level AND losing World War IV to Islam AND losing our nation to Hispanic sappers.
It could get very, very, very bad. We could lose America.
::::::::
And the tragic part is that a big percentage of the American public do not even realize the threat — fat, dumb and happy — the Joe Sixpacks and their ilk just keep voting them back in. While Washington fiddles, America burns.
The Federalists were embodied in Alexander Hamilton and the Republicans were embodied in the views of Thomas Jefferson.
Agree..Obama is so totally worthless he will screw up big time. That will leave conservatives an opportunity to regain the GOP..house and senate. Big gamble.
McCain will ruin the conservative movement...no question about it. We will lose more in the 2010 and 2012 races.
If the bull dyke gets in we may all be sent off to “camps”
Are you thinking that Ron Paul or Ralph Nader or some wacko party is going to come in and upset the major parties? If you vote for someone like that you might as well stay home because they are not going to win.
I’m guessing the economy will tank, which might lead to a revival of fiscal responsibility, something even Republicans have forgotten.
Like any addicts, they may have to hit bottom, but there’s got to be a better way.
"ONLY"? Are you insane? In that time he will have a minimum of two SCOTUS picks, and could possibly have a filibuster-free Senate. We also will be dealing with Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, with an administration seeking "dialogue" with Iran, and possessing total hostility to the "Zionist entity". Do the math on what will result from that. For a hint, Google "Hitler" and "1938".
Obama and his vile wife may well destroy this nation. We cannot afford a single day of a B. Hussein presidency (I spit when even saying those words!). Any vote which is not for McCain is a vote for The Obama Nakba.
“What makes you so sure? What record of supporting conservative Justices can you point to that will support your claim.”
How about Alito and Roberts? On the other hand, McCain can always appoint staunch conservatives like O’Connor and Kennedy. Oh wait, they were liberals and appointed by Reagan.
The question is if we are due for a crash who should rule during it. SSI, Medicare, Medical, the ongoing monetary inflation of the fed, the price of oil, the derivatives meltdown, the over-extended US military, the desire to leave Iraq prematurely, the mortgage crisis, spiraling federal deficits, city’s going bankrupt.
This is the world the Dems built. The Dems will effectively own Congress in 2009, no matter who wins the POTUS contest. Do we really want to give them the convenient out of a liberal, Republican president to blame all this on.
What the hell will Pelosi say with the ROCK STAR(tm) in the white house. It’s all Bush’s fault? HA HA HA.
Let ‘em have it. Sometimes a good defense is the best offense. Now is one of those times.
He won't? Why so? Study much history??

What no one seems to be talking about is the huge problem of massive leftist indoctrination of our college youth. I hate to be negative, however I don’t believe conservatism will be able to stem this tremendous tide much longer. Add to that the ever increasing destruction of Church & Family and the Great Mexican Democrat Invasion, it seems to me that the best days of the Grand Old Party & Conservatism may be behind us. Rush & Co., The Heritage Foundation, etc,. etc. - with all their influece (?) could not even produce for us a viable Conservative candidate. The GOP & Conservatism is in shambles & I don’t see much light at the end of the tunnel. My greatest fear is that the Left is fixing to leave the Right in the dust. It is said that the youth does not show up to vote, but I believe Obama is changing all that.
Someone throw me a lifeline, wouldya’? I will not go down without a fight!!
