Ex-Patriots Assistant Sends the N.F.L. Eight Tapes (Congressional investigation soon to follow)
NY Times ^ | 5/8/2008 | GREG BISHOP

Posted on 05/08/2008 11:37:23 AM PDT by tobyhill

A former New England Patriots employee has sent the N.F.L. eight videotapes showing the team recorded play-calling signals by coaches of five opponents in six games between the 2000 and 2002 seasons, in violation of league rules.

But the group of tapes does not include video of the St. Louis Rams’ walk-through practice the day before the 2002 Super Bowl. The employee, Matt Walsh, had been linked to such a tape by news media speculation.

Walsh emerged as a pivotal figure in the spying controversy that enveloped the Patriots last season after they were caught taping Jets defensive signals in the season opener.

Walsh, who worked for the Patriots from 1997 to 2003, agreed to turn over the tapes and other evidence by Thursday under an agreement reached last month between lawyers for the N.F.L. and Walsh. The agreement indemnifies Walsh from all future legal fees.

I agree, the Pats have no credibility at this time. The only way they have a chance at restoring it is to go on and win three more. If they can do it again they will have at least proved they can win without cheating. It still leaves open the question of the caliber of man Belechik is to have done something like this.

Stock manipulation is meaningless to the survival of the nation as is bank robbery. Should we just look the other way? Football is a HUGE business and money is (legally) bet on it every week. What about those people?

Matt Walsh never said he had tapes of the SB walk-thru.

Matt Walsh can claim anything he wants, as long as he prays to God almighty that Tomase keeps his mouth shut.

This is a croc...teams have been stealing other team’s signals for decades...not just in football but baseball is even more “theft” prone.....all those centerfield cameras focused on the catcher’s signals. This is BS, and certainly nothing to be wasting congressional time on.

We have another nomination for post of the year. You have it exactly correct. Well said.

Were any closed practices and if so, who let them into the practice? As I said it’s probably not illegal, just against league rules, but it’s the Justice Dept’s job to find out if there is a possibility, not congresses.

“I was at a Texas Rangers game last week and I swear the outfielder for KC gave me a hand gesture.”

A couple years ago I attended a Reds/Indians game in Cincy and I sat in a seat near center field. Ken Griffey Jr. made a lame attempt at fielding a looping fly ball and I verbally expressed my opinion regarding his lack of hustle and large salary. Mr. Griffey expressed his opinion by turning to me while grabbing his crotch with his glove and flipping “the bird” with his other hand. The Cincy fans were shocked.

Much to my delight CC Sabathia, pitcher for Cleveland, ripped a homer over Jr.’s head a couple innings later.

F- “those people”. They should choose a different past-time. You’ll garner no sympathy whatsoever from me for gamblers.

I’ll say it one more time: We are talking about a GAME, here. Get over it.

Allowing stock manipulation and bank robbery would be seriously deliterious to the survival of the nation. If the NFL went away tomorrow there would be a bunch of weeping, whining and carping from the “fans” but, apart from a mild and temporary increase in the unemployment rate, it would have NO effect on our viability as a nation.

"Spoken like someone who perceives his ox has been gored. When you're on the top, like the Patriots are, someone is always looking to tear you down, and when they can't do it on the field, they try to do it by other means---even the most flimsiest of means. All your bellyaching and hyperventilating indignity means absolutely zero."

LOL, not my OX, pal. I'm a BIG BLUE fan and unless I've been dreaming all these months it was my team that gave yours the ultimate payback all in one stretch of just 3 hours. Not only did the cheating Pats lose their perfect season they lost the SB in addition.

There's nothing flimsy about cheating not once but as it now appears on 8 different occasions. My team won and did it fairly, yours lost despite confirmed instances of cheating without which they very probably would not have been there in the first place.

Anything less then 12 wins and a league title next year sends the teams public image straight down the chute for the foreseeable future.

Fire Goddell and replace him with Condi Rice.

If it gets her out of State, then I'm all for it.

But I love Goddell's personal character policy. I was disappointed with the way he handled the original punishment, but maybe he can rectify that mistake now.

Was that wrong? Should I have not done that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorance on this thing because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing was frowned upon...

The 2002 AFC championship game had two Patriots interceptions on crucial 4th quarter Steelers drives. Almost like the defenders knew where to be before the pass was thrown. I was blaming Kordell Stewart back then, but this makes you wonder...

"When you're on the top, like the Patriots are, someone is always looking to tear you down, and when they can't do it on the field, they try to do it by other means"

It's a 12-Step program. The first step is to admit there is a problem. The problem? The Patriots were caught cheating. Not just once and not just twice. That is what will live in the minds of football fans for, at least, few more decades.

Admitting the cheating won't make it go away, but it'll make it a little easier for Pats fans... somehow. At least, that's what they say.

Good Luck with that. ;-)

Post of the year?

Everyone else cheats, so it’s OK if we cheat.

Yep, a shining example.
