Prolonging the life of 84-year-old Samuel Golubchuk when he has virtually no hope of recovery is an "abomination," says a doctor who has resigned over the controversial case.
Golubchuk's children are waging a court fight to ensure their father is not taken off life support by staff at Grace General Hospital.
Golubchuk, an Orthodox Jew, has been on life support there since early November. In December, doctors advised the family they wanted to take the man off the system because he showed minimal brain activity, could not communicate, and showed no signs of improvement.
In March, Justice Perry Schulman granted a temporary injunction allowing Golubchuk to remain on life support until a trial could decide the issue for good.
Adhering to the court order is forcing doctors to breach their medial ethics, said Dr. Anand Kumar, who resigned his medical privileges at the hospital last month.
"If we honestly continue to follow the court mandate ... we will have to continue to surgically hack away at his infected flesh ... in order to keep infections at bay," wrote Kumar in an affidavit quoted in court yesterday.
'GROTESQUE'
"This is grotesque. To inflict this kind of assault on him without reasonable expectation of benefit is an abomination and I can't do it."
Lawyers for the Golubchuk family and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority were back in court yesterday after the WRHA filed a motion to secure an earlier trial date. The trial is set to begin in November.
Justice Marc Monnin is expected to rule on the matter in the next few days.

Several other articles came out about this opus of doc, but they are too much whine and not enough cheese, just repeats. Libs can’t take a joke.
