There's a lot of news articles on this, but the speech needs to be read in its entirety.

I sound like a broken record here, but John Paul Stevens is 88 years old, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 75. They will likely retire soon. McCain voted for Thomas, Alito, and Roberts. Obama and Clinton voted against Roberts and voted to fillibuster Alito. We may get good judges from McCain. We will NOT get good judges from Clinton. We will get Breyers and Ginsburgs from them.

That is why I will hold my nose and vote for McCain in November.

I understand McCain supports La Raza and the overthrow of the US govt. How does this square with him running for President of said country - doesn’t make sense.

Thanks for positing! A good speach from mcCain. Obama will appoint people in the ilk of Reverend Wright.

Everyone should be very afraid of letting Obama anywhere near the White House....even if it requires the purchase of clothes-pins!

Ping for reference. I want to see the transcript of this speech compared to his upcoming July 14 remarks at the La Raza Annual Convention in San Diego.

“I will look for accomplished men and women with a proven record of excellence in the law, and a proven commitment to judicial restraint.”

There is a clear distinction here between McCain the other two on this very crucial issue - a clear enough distinction that should make any conservative think twice about sitting this one out or voting third party.

Time for that will come later.

I understand McCain bashing is a sport among whiney drama queens who are still fighting the last war (nomination) and like to hijack threads.

Enjoy the next 4 years of the Worst President Ever:

bump for later reading

Holding my nose here, also, which is hard to do while you’re crawling over broken glass. However, I agree that SCOTUS is too important to play with, and the fact that all three branches will be in the dems hands for a couple of years until the mid-terms, means that they can pretty much do what they will, and approve whoever they want. We stand a better change of getting someone who at least will not believe that the constitution ‘lives and breathes’ if McCain is elected, and we learned pretty quickly with the Miers debacle exactly how loud our voices can be if we have to make sure we are heard.

Words are cheap.

His actions in cozying up to La Raza and embracing their agenda of destroying our borders speak volumes.

McCain - should he be elevated - will not get his snot past a democrat controlled Congress on this subject.

McCain can make all the speeches he wants regarding the TYPE of Supreme Court justice he wants to nominate. And right after they get turned down by a Democrat controlled Senate, he’ll back down, reach across the aisle, and give us another Souter.

It reads like a Reagan speech.

Too bad he is the furthest thing from a Reagan:

As my proof, I offer his history:

1. Gang of Fourteen (Kept some of President Bush’s best judges from being presented for a vote) See here and here
2. McCain-Fiengold (Assault on Free Speech and Pro-Life
3. McCain-Kennedy (Amnesty for criminal Illegal Aliens)
4. McCain-Lieberman (50 cents a gallon tax)
5. Total support for global warming scam, including the Carbon Cap-and-Trade system. See Here
6. Support for embryonic stem cell research (Murder of unborn babies).
7. Wants to close Gitmo and give Terrorists access to our legal system.
8. F grade from Gun-Owners of America.
9. C grade from NRA.
10. 65% score from American Conservative Union in 2006
11. Wants to bail out sub-prime losers (many of which are either illegal aliens or lied on thier applications) with US tax money.
12. Voted against President Bush’s tax cuts (called them tax-cuts for the rich)
13. Flirted with the idea of crossing over to the Dems in 2004.
14. Wants to implement a socialist Health Care proposal that includes providing tax-coffer monies (your tax dollars) to the states to provide Health Care Insurance for those who either refuse to pay for it, or are unable to afford it (mostly illegal aliens).
15. Divorced his wife after he got back from Vietnam. The same woman who remained true to him and raised his kids while he was imprisoned.
16. Refuses to drill in ANWR. See here and here
17. Agrees with Democrats that our Foreign Policy has been arrogant and we need to be more humble.
18. Thinks and states that Pharmaceutical companies are evil
19. Has accepted funding from Soros and Teresa Heinz-Kerry for his institute
20. John McCain's Top 10 Class-Warfare Arguments Against Tax Cuts
21 "I think the Democrat Party is a fine and I have no problems with it, in their views and philosophy"
22. Strongly against Same Sex Marriage Ban Constitutional Amendment
23. Voted for Pro-Abortion Bill and Here.
24. Voted against bill that would impose sanctions against foreign governments and companies that invest more than $20 million in Iran's energy sector until the president certified to Congress that Iran had dismantled its weapons of mass destruction Here and Here
25. Voted against repealing the death tax.
26. McCain-Edwards-Kennedy    (Many Democrat inspired bad rules included in this monstrosity)

1. Gang of Fourteen (Got some of President Bush’s best judges presented for a vote)
2. McCain-Bush
3. McCain-Bush
4. Nice ticket
5. Smart enough to not allow the Democrats to demogogue an issue that resonates with a majority of voters.
6. No one’s perfect
7. Admiral Mullen, Secretary Gates
8. Never heard of them
9. Hey it’s better than Gun-Owners of America
10. Yep that means at his worst he agrees with conservatives 65% of the time (82% lifetime)- not 33% as you claim elsewhere.
The Rest. Who cares? What a bore.

I held my nose and voted for Bush for the same reason, and I was not dissapointed. Of course, we really had to hold his feet to the fire with the Harriet Myers debacle, but all's well that ends well. I suspect that if he gets elected, we might have to hold McCain's feet to the fire a few times as well. :)
