“The U.S. is building a new prison, in Afghanistan, for up to 1100 terrorists and terrorism suspects. The existing prison, in Bagram air base, holds 610 inmates. Apparently, the U.S. wants to transfer the 270 prisoners held at the at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba prison.”

That’s good news.

Summing it up, the Taliban are losers.

That’s good news.

You’re tag line is right on, Godzilla.

Close Gitmo, send the dirtbags “home”. LOL

I’m sure the Afghans can work up a suitable welcome for them, the ACLU lawyers and their fan club in the MSM.

Press Release A080524a
May 24, 2008

Four wanted bombing suspects, 13 others detained

BAGHDAD – Coalition forces killed three terrorists and detained 17 suspected terrorists, including four wanted bombing suspects, during operations Friday and Saturday targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq.

Coalition forces captured two wanted men and one additional suspected terrorist during an operation Friday in Baghdad. The wanted men are believed to be car bombers tied to an AQI bombing facilitation network that smuggles explosives into the country.

Saturday, Coalition forces captured two men wanted for their alleged connection to AQI car bombing networks in Baghdad. Information from an operation conducted on May 5th led Coalition forces to one of the wanted men in Baghdad who was allegedly involved in a suicide bombing attack that killed five U.S. Soldiers. The second wanted man was detained near Balad, about 60 kilometers north of Baghdad. Two additional suspected terrorists were detained in the operations.

Coalition forces continued their ongoing targeting of AQI terrorists in the Tigris River Valley Saturday during a series of operations between Bayji and Tikrit, detaining eight suspected terrorists. As Coalition forces arrived at one target building, three armed terrorists attempted to evade the force. Coalition forces fired warning shots, but the terrorists continued toward the security perimeter. Coalition forces responded to the hostile threat by engaging and killing the three terrorists. In their vehicle, Coalition forces discovered additional weapons, including a machine gun, grenades and bomb-making materials, which they safely destroyed on site.

In Mosul, Coalition forces conducted two operations targeting AQI elements and detained two suspected terrorists. Despite clearly identifying themselves, as Coalition forces approached one of the target locations they received small arms fire from two separate positions. Responding in self-defense, Coalition forces returned fire. Discovering an Iraqi Police patrol in one of the positions, all firing ceased. During the three-way engagement, a man in the area was struck by gunfire. A Coalition forces medic treated him on site, but the man died of his wounds before Iraqi emergency services arrived.

“MNF-I sincerely regrets when any innocent civilian is injured. We take every precaution to protect innocent civilians and engage only hostile threats,” said Maj. John Hall, MNF-I spokesman.

“Does course on Islam give law enforcers wrong idea?”
By Janet I. Tu
Seattle Times religion reporter

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “It’s not unusual for police to get training in religious backgrounds when religious extremists are potentially causing violence, said Terri-Ann Betancourt, a spokeswoman for the Port of Seattle, which helped locate the venue for the program.

Port Police Chief Colleen Wilson met with local CAIR representatives and offered to have them come in to do additional training. Bukhari said CAIR intends to do so.

Port and Seattle police officers also agreed to debrief after the program to see if there was “anything in the session that was discriminatory or would cause alarm,” Betancourt said. “If so, they would be happy to share that with other chiefs around the state.”

NHS hospitals lose 32,000 beds in a decade

The cutbacks mean increasing numbers of hospitals are going on “black alert” – which involves closing their doors to new patients because they are full.

Patients’ groups described the loss of the beds, at a time when overcrowded wards have seen soaring rates of killer infections, as “a national scandal”.

The reduction contradicts a pledge from Tony Blair at the turn of the century that there would be 7,000 more NHS beds by 2010. New figures, seen by The Telegraph, show that the number of health service beds fell more than 8,000 last year, as the NHS began a reorganisation process which will mean the closure of dozens of hospitals.

“Colombian Defense Ministry says top guerrilla dead”
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
BOGOTA, Colombia

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “In a statement, the ministry said “we have learned through different military intelligence means” that the commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Manuel “Sureshot” Marulanda, died on March 26.

“We know that inside the FARC, the version is that he died of natural causes, specifically from a heart attack,” the ministry said.

Marulanda is believed to be about 80.

First word of Marulanda’s possible death came earlier Saturday when the newsmagazine Semana quoted Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos as saying he had information that Marulanda died in the guerrillas’ southern Colombian stronghold at the time of three bombing raids.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON — An Al Qaeda figure killed in a U.S. airstrike in Pakistan last week is believed to have been an Algerian allegedly involved in training militants and plotting attacks against the West, officials said Friday.

The Algerian, known by the nickname Abu Sulayman Jazairi, apparently died May 14 in the strike that killed as many as 14 people and destroyed a compound near the village of Damadola, an Al Qaeda stronghold in northwestern Pakistan, officials said. Idaho radioactive waste containers had filters removed
May 22, 2008

IDAHO FALLS -- A U.S. Department of Energy investigation into the removal and discarding of filters from eight drums containing radioactive waste at an eastern Idaho nuclear facility has determined that the incident was not an act of sabotage. However, officials offered no explanation as to why an employee removed the filters, creating the potential for contaminating other workers. The company responsible for processing the nuclear waste, Bechtel BWXT Idaho, said an employee confessed to removing the filters, according to Bechtel spokesman Rick Dale.

Officials have refused to identify the individual, who no longer works at the facility. No one was contaminated, the company said. Bechtel immediately increased security after the April 9 incident was discovered. Those procedures included requiring permission from management before employees could enter the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project facility at the Idaho National Laboratory, an 890-square-mile federal nuclear research area. Once inside, the company also required employees to maintain visual contact with each other. Those precautions have since been discontinued.

The precautions were put in place according to two internal company memos obtained by the Post Register, one sent to Bechtel employees on April 10 and another on April 14. "I cannot overstate the seriousness of this incident," Bechtel President and General Manager Jeff Mousseau wrote in the April 10 memo. "Whether deliberate or an accident, had there been a release of radioactivity from these drums, the people who would have been exposed to potential contamination would have been our fellow workers."

Truck with nine tonnes of gelatine explosives was stolen (India)
24 May 2008

RAIPUR — An unclaimed truck loaded with about nine tonnes of gelatine explosives, which was seized here, was stolen in Chhattisgarh while going from Jharkhand to Maharashtra, the police said yesterday. The recovery has sent the police into a tizzy. They have started a probe on whether the explosives in the truck, parked on the outskirts of Raipur, were meant for Maoist insurgents who are active in the state.

The truck was found abandoned on Thursday, a few metres from the national highway that connects the Chhattisgarh capital to the industrial cities of Bhilai and Nagpur. “We can’t imagine that an unclaimed truck loaded with gelatine explosives boxes could be found in Raipur. These were kept in wooden boxes,” Lal Umed Singh, city superintendent of police, told IANS. He said: “A probe is on and we can’t rule out possibility that the explosives were brought here either for terrorism purposes in Raipur or for supplying to Maoists who are very active in the state’s southern Bastar region.”

On the basis of preliminary investigation, the police officials claim that the explosives were ordered by a Nagpur-based coal mine company. The truck was on its way to Nagpur in Maharashtra from Jharkhand when the vehicle was stolen in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir district, about 200 km from Raipur. “It’s fact that the truck was stolen in Janjgir district while on way to Nagpur, but it’s still a mystery how it reached Raipur and was then abandoned,” said sources at the police headquarters here.

EPA tests plans to protect water from terrorists
Sat May 24, 2008

CINCINNATI - Water utilities would get earlier warning of viruses, bacteria or chemicals that could be introduced into drinking water systems by terrorists under a test monitoring program set for expansion beyond Cincinnati.

The pilot program ordered by the Department of Homeland Security in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks uses continuous monitoring of public water for contaminants that could sicken or kill millions of people. Some utilities only do spot checks now for such germs, pesticides or radioactive materials. Some utilities might find that they need additional video cameras and alarms to warn of intruders at water tanks or other sites. Once the pilot program is complete, the Environmental Protection Agency hopes to have a national water security model that utilities could adopt at their own expense.

"Water supplies are very, very accessible targets for biological or chemical weapons," said Donna Schlagheck, a Wright State University political scientist who specializes in American foreign policy and international terrorism. "There are so many potential targets — whether you are taking water from the ground or a river or a lake — and the vulnerability there is enormous."

Pentagon charges detainee with terrorism support
Fri May 23, 2008

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon on Friday charged an accused al Qaeda training camp instructor with conspiracy and support of terrorism.

Noor Uthman Muhammed, a Sudanese man held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, was accused of working as a weapons trainer from 1996 to 2000 at the Khaldan training camp in Afghanistan. In the only accusation unrelated to his alleged work at the training camp, the U.S. military said Muhammed delivered a fax machine to al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 1999. He was captured in Pakistan in March 2002, the U.S. military said.

Hezbollah's army survives under Lebanon peace deal
Sat May 24

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Hezbollah fighters have pulled back since seizing parts of Lebanon's capital, but their brazen display has made one thing clear: A private army blamed for terrorist attacks on Western interests and dedicated to the destruction of Israel will be a fixture in this weakened country for a long time.

Lebanon is an ideal incubator for Hezbollah's military clout, just as Afghanistan served al-Qaida. Lebanon's U.S.-funded military doesn't interfere with the thousands of rockets and missiles that militants are believed to have hidden in basements and bunkers throughout Shiite Muslim areas of the tiny country.

Hezbollah's refusal to discuss disarmament at talks with Lebanese factions in Qatar last week means it has formidable firepower to unleash at will. This could have wider implications, given Hezbollah's summer war with Israel two years ago, though some Lebanese suspect Hezbollah's main objectives include local power grabs and settling ethnic scores.
