Afghan teacher shot dead after speech condemning suicide bombings
Why Islamic reform is about as likely as an attack by men from Mars, part 65320: “Afghan teacher killed after speech condemning suicide bombings,” from The Associated Press, May 14 (thanks to Jeffrey Imm):
KABUL, Afghanistan: A teacher was shot to death in northern Afghanistan after he gave a speech condemning suicide bombings, officials said Wednesday.
Abdul Hadi criticized such attacks as un-Islamic and un-Afghan during a speech Tuesday in the Archi district of Kunduz province, said Khair Mohammad Subat, the provincial education department director.
Hadi spoke at a gathering of about 700 people, including the Kunduz governor, and was on his way home when he was killed, Subat said....

Coalition Forces in Iraq Capture 16 Suspects
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, May 14, 2008 Coalition forces caught 16 suspected terrorists today in central and northern Iraq during operations to disrupt the al-Qaida in Iraq network.
Coalition forces captured a wanted man and five other suspects during two operations targeting al-Qaida in Iraq cells in Mosul. The wanted man is believed to be a cell leader who plans and conducts bombing attacks against coalition forces.
West of Samarra, about 65 miles north of Baghdad, coalition forces captured an alleged associate of senior al-Qaida in Iraq leaders in Salahuddin province.
Northwest of Balad, about 50 miles north of Baghdad, coalition forces captured a man who allegedly facilitates suicide bombings. They detained six additional suspects in that operation.
Coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists in Baghdad during an operation targeting an al-Qaida in Iraq senior leader.
In operations in Iraq yesterday, an Iraqi special weapons and tactics team caught four suspected terrorists in Tal Afar, about 240 miles northwest of Baghdad. The operations targeted major cell members of the Islamic Sons of Iraq, which officials said is a front organization for the foreign-led al-Qaida in Iraq. Those captured are suspected of recent bombings and attacks against the local citizens and coalition forces.
Also yesterday, Iraqi army soldiers found a large weapons cache in Mosul. The cache included 600 pounds of bulk explosives, grenades, 200 pounds of ammunition, 16 radios, three mortar tubes, a rocket-propelled-grenade launcher, eight AK-47 assault rifles, a rocket, 10 dynamite blocks and five pipe bombs.
In operations May 11, a local citizen led Iraqi soldiers to a cache in Shakariya, southwest of Baghdad. The cache included 50 rocket fuses, varied ammunition, an anti-tank grenade, three pressure plates, a bag of homemade explosives, and various trigger components.

Taliban commander’s compound attacked in Bajaur Agency bordering Afghanistan
outlookindia.com ^ | May 14 2008

At least a dozen militants, including foreigners, were killed today in a missile strike on a Taliban commander’s compound in Pakistan’s restive Bajaur Agency bordering Afghanistan.
Local residents said a pilotless drone fired two guided missiles at the compound of Taliban commander Maulvi Obaidullah in the Damadola area of Bajaur Agency late tonight.
Pakistani Taliban spokesman Maulvi Omar confirmed the attack but did not give details. Locals said Taliban fighters cordoned off Obaidullah’s home and madrassa after the missile strike and did not allow people to approach the area.
Pakistani TV news channels gave varying death toll figures.
Dawn News channel reported that 12 militants, including foreigners, were killed, while other channels said up to 20 people were feared killed.
The military said it had no information on the attack. Over the past few months, there have been several missile strikes on Taliban bases in Pakistan’s tribal areas that were blamed on pilotless aircraft operated by US forces in Afghanistan.

“Airline plot accused ‘had codes’”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Documents containing coded phrases were found in a house connected to Umar Islam, a defendant in the airliner bomb plot trial, Woolwich Crown Court heard.
The papers held tables with codes for places such as the American and British embassies and the intelligence services, the jury was told.
Eight men are accused of planning to detonate home-made bombs, disguised as soft drinks, on several flights.
All deny conspiring to murder and endangering planes in August 2006.
The documents were found when police searched a house on Bushey Road in Plaistow, east London, on 10 August 2006, following Mr Islam’s arrest.
Prosecutor Peter Wright QC read some of the “coded phrases”, along with their meanings, out to the jury.
He alleged that some of the phrases were codes for particular actions, while others represented key places and destinations.
Included on one table were the codes: “Someone ready for Jihad - going to have a party”; “accident happened - car broke down or how are you, how’s your mother,” the jury was told.
Under a heading called “Persons and Institutions”, “sweet shop” stood for the British embassy.
Under the heading “Countries and Locations”, the UK became “Argentina”, the prosecution said.
Defending Islam, Lawrence McNulty said the papers were found among personal documents not relating to his client.
Phone cards
Mr Wright also gave the jury a breakdown of the mobile phones, calling cards, landlines and sim cards which the defendants are alleged to have used to keep in contact with each other.”

“Jihadis Urge Naval Terrorism in the Middle East”
By Abdul Hameed Bakier
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Islamist forums and jihadi media have been promoting and threatening to perpetrate naval terrorism as an important strategic trend in the jihadi path. Jihad Press, an e-journal affiliated with al-Qaeda, issued a statement entitled Naval Terrorism, a Strategic Necessity, which was carried by several different jihadi forums (hanein.info, April 30). The Jihad Press article was re-published by other pro-jihadi media outlets attributing it to al-Qaeda, some of which added further comments intended to instigate naval terror attacks in Yemen (asrarpress.net, April 30).”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Jihadi forum contributors hailed the new strategy as appropriate and necessary, especially for jihadis desiring to redeploy in Somalia. The subject is timely. Many brothers from Yemen, Southern Saudi [Arabia] and beyond want to troop out to Somalia, but fear the enemys control of the sea, which is one of the important points jihadis must control, says one forum participant.
Although jihadis are encouraging naval terrorism as a new phase in their targeting agenda, jihadi ideologues have long talked about the return of naval jihad. Jihadis believe that free navigation has critical importance for the U.S. economy and has to be disrupted. The fact that many significant sea passages, such as the Suez Canal and the Bosphorus, Mandab and Gibraltar Straits, are surrounded by, or in the vicinity of, Islamic countries and the low cost of perpetrating naval attacksjihadis had to spend only a few thousand dollars to attack the multi-million dollar USS Colemakes naval jihad a potentially serious terror threat. As Somalias pirates have shown, shipping in the region can be easily disrupted by lightly-armed groups in small motorboats.”
