Rev. Wright Stays in Spotlight, Possible Problem for Obama Camp

WASHINGTON – The Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., the longtime pastor of Sen. Barack Obama, said in a speech Monday that criticisms of his provocative sermons, and questions about his patriotism, were "an attack on the black church." At the National Press Club, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright says Sen. Barack Obama did not denounce him and only distanced himself from remarks he made. He also discusses his controversial words. Video courtesy of Reuters. (April 28)

The address at the National Press Club was one of several made in recent days by the Chicago minister, breaking weeks of silence after broadcast video clips of some of his sermons prompted accusations that he disliked the U.S. The clips created a swirl of controversy around the presidential campaign of Sen. Obama, prompting the Democratic candidate to deliver an address on racism in this country where he distanced himself from his pastor's remarks.

It seems unlikely that Monday's address -- covered by dozens of members of the media -- will soothe those American voters, pundits and politicians who have said that Sen. Obama should have quit Rev. Wright's church.

Rev. Wright told the audience of ministers, friends and journalists he has told Sen. Obama that if he is elected president, "I'm coming after you.'' The minister said he had issues with U.S. policies.

He also argued that his provocative sermons had been misconstrued. "Black preaching," Mr. Wright said, "is different from European and European-American preaching. It is not deficient. It is just different. It is not bombastic, it is not controversial. It is just different."

Mr. Wright said the black church is waiting to be seen as equal to the one attended by whites. "The black church's role in the figh

"Mr. Wright said the black church is waiting to be seen as equal to the one attended by whites. "The black church's role in the fight for equality and justice from the 1700s up until 2008 has always had at its core the non-negotiable doctrine of reconciliation -- children of God repenting for past sins against each other," Rev. Wright said. America, he told his listeners, has never apologized for the "sins of racism.""

Once this guy got the spotlight, there’s no getting him out. At least alive.

Maybe they should repossess his new mansion.

At the core of his "nono-negotiable" statement is this core belief in Black Liberation Theology, as stated by its founder, James Hal Cone:

"Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community ... Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love."
This is the critical thing to get at, this core belief that is so bigoted, so full of hate, so un-Christian to its core.

Amazing, isn’t it? Wright isn’t even trying to mitigate the damage. He’s leaning on the throttle as hard as he can.

"He’s leaning on the throttle as hard as he can."

Why has he chosen to be such a provocateur?

I didn't anticipate Rev. Wright would stick his thumb in the eye of long-time parishioners like the Obamas. It really is a rude and disrespectful insult.

Nothing hints that they deserve such treatment. There must be some long-simmering resentment or slight that we aren't privy to.

I very much enjoy hearing the Rev. speak and
speak. Any chance he will be invited to speak
at the Dems Convention? Oh, how I would enjoy!
How about a Obama/Wright ticket? (sarcasm on)

Now, it is Rev Wright who is obfuscating about the truth of Black Liberation Theology. He doesn’t want social equality, he wants socialist equality, rather fascism. If the Rev. Wright believed in pure socialism, he’d be donating the millions from that retirement fund to the poor.
