McCain has his problems, but I seem to recall that he was one of the very few who did not pander to the Iowans on this issue.
Full disclosure: I had formerly supported more use of ethanol as part of a broad based diversification of energy sources for security reasons. I am not too proud to say when a boondoggle is a boondoggle. There are things we should do to reduce dependence on foreign energy sources, corn based ethanol is not one of them.
Yes, drill Gaia's brains out and extract every ounce of oil we can.
Actually, he didn’t support ethanol before he supported it and now he doesn’t support it again. The flip before the flop, from CNN.com October 2006:
“In a flip-flop so absurd it’ll be a wonder if it doesn’t get lampooned by late-night comedians - not to mention opponents’ negative ads - McCain is now proclaiming himself a “strong” ethanol supporter.
‘I support ethanol and I think it is a vital, a vital alternative energy source not only because of our dependency on foreign oil but its greenhouse gas reduction effects,’ he said in an August speech in Grinnell, Iowa, as reported by the Associated Press.”
