That’s because you put Vista on an old machine. You can’t buy a hard drive that small anymore and it’s been several years since 20 gig was the norm.
Perhaps the drives were partioned with a small systems partition.

We didn't install Vista on the old machines. The old machines, were actually running Windows 2000 pro. My Tech guy told us that there were large windows 2000 updates that downloaded (because they were set to automatically download updates from Microsoft). These updates were supposedly to help with compatibility issues with Vista. After years of security and other updates, there was finally not enough room left on the old drives.

That’s because you put Vista on an old machine. Geez, rightsmart - don't you understand that your PC is Microsoft's b*tch? Just suck it up and get a 10 terabyte drive with a 40 GHz processor and 2 terabytes of RAM, so their bloatware can limp along until the next update...
