Standoff emerges at polygamist retreat

Ambulances are being sent to a polygamist compound in West Texas as authorities prepare "for the worst" in a conflict with members of the compound.

Prosecutor Allison Palmer says sect leaders Saturday refused to let authorities search a temple for a 16-year-old member who reported being physically abused.

Palmer tells the San Angelo Standard-Times that medical workers are being sent "in case this were to a go in a way that no one wants."

She says that law enforcers are "preparing for the worst."

A search warrant authorized troopers to enter the retreat run by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They are looking for evidence of a marriage between the girl and a 50-year-old man.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Sheesh, I am getting bashed for NOT bashing Moromons? ME?

LOL! But have you ever been bashed (or received a Mod warning) for talking about the weather?

The children are being held by Child Welfare based on a phone call from a 16 year old girl “alleging” abuse. The latest on FOX is that 159 children and 60 adults have been taken from the “compound”. No arrests have been made.

Child welfare Services are placing children in Foster Homes as we speak. Reporters are asking the same questions that I have asked. This is Police State tactics in action. Get some popcorn because this may get ugly.

>>”If a weapons cache were reported under a mosque (and I for one don’t doubt they exist) it OUGHT to be investigated. Unless one believes that because jihad is part of their religion, it gets protected by the Constitution and we can’t do anything to stop it. Do you really, seriously believe that the Constitution should protect that sort of thing?”<<

You might have misread my statement. I was trying to point out that the government would be slow to investigate such a claim and quick to jump on the FLDS. I believe for every roadside bombing at least one U.S. Mosque should be leveled. We’re on the same page on that subject!

“Troopers armed with a search warrant raided the compound on Friday to look for evidence of a marriage between the girl and 50-year-old Dale Barlow.”

I guess this is one way to get inside information. They’re lucky they weren’t shot by the FLDS. Then it would have been another Waco! So very close, metmom. This is not how you investigate an alleged abuse case.

Nothing absurd about it. Suggesting the government leave these people alone is much the same as approving of polygamy. And polygamy is against the law.

The collapse of both the Greek and Roman empires occurred after their acceptance of homosexuality in their midst. The devestating impacts of homosexuality in our society are soon being felt.

I did. I see your point.

I guess when you're not dealing with a group that's inclined to saw off your head or blow up your house, it is easier to act.

Meisner said investigators were still trying to determine whether the girl who called authorities last week was among the people removed from the compound. Many of the girls in the sect are related to one another and share similar names.

State troopers armed with a search warrant raided the compound on Friday to look for evidence of a marriage between the girl, who allegedly had a baby at 15, and 50-year-old Dale Barlow.

What would you suggest for investigating an alleged abuse case? They're using a search warrant. They need to ID the girl. I guess you're objecting to removing the women and children more than going in with a search warrant?

If these women and children aren't free to talk in front of the male without the threat of repercussions, then no useful information can be got.

I still can't help but wonder how many of them really objected to leaving but so far I haven't heard from any news sources. Yes, I have problems with them being forced to leave. If they left under their own free will, good for them. I'm glad they got out.

Also, the beginning of classical Greek civilization and the Roman empire occurred after their acceptance of homosexuality.

The Greeks had homosexuality from the start. Achilles and Patroclus in the Iliad prove that. Sappho lived around 600 BC.

The Romans became gayer after conquering the Greeks. But that was well before the height of their power. The main difference is that the Romans had slave boy toys and frowned on sex between male Roman citizens, whereas in Greece male lovers could have equal social status.

Only one Roman emperor didn’t have any known gay lover. That was Claudius. Being straight wasn’t a big help to him, since he had to have his third wife, the notorious Messalina, beheaded for her prolific adultery and related plot to overthrow him, and his next wife Aggrippina Minor allegedly poisoned him. He divorced his first two wives, which for Romans was no big deal.

Our Constitution was carefully crafted to prohibit the sort of theocracy you describe. Voluntary polygamy and polyandry on the part of adult citizens are none of government’s business (nor is monogamy, for that matter). Rape of unwilling children IS government’s business, and that’s what this “raid” is about.

The formulation of stating absurd analysis and dishonest conclusions as questions putting every post in stupid little boxes is so lame that it never advances an idea.

OK, if Uncle Sam didn't kick in welfare-wise & entitlement-wise for the increased level of negative "fruit" churned out by "alternative families," then you MIGHT have a point. If cohabitation wasn't equated with increased family break-ups, a slew of negative social science consequences across the board for both the children & cohabiters of such arrangements--even increased domestic violence, etc, then, again, you MIGHT have a point (that Uncle Sam should remain disinterested).

I could go on more in this vein...The problem is, you just haven't looked very carefully at the social science indicators. If the govt. is going to eventually have to (or want to) subsidize certain negative lifestyles, then it should be looking at these lifestyles on the front end--not just the back end.

>>”What would you suggest for investigating an alleged abuse case?”<<

The FBI infiltrated the mob, drug cartels and many other secretive groups. They could certainly work their way into this group given time.

>>”I guess you're objecting to removing the women and children more than going in with a search warrant?”<<

Yes.

>>”Yes, I have problems with them being forced to leave. If they left under their own free will, good for them. I'm glad they got out.”<<

That's the point I've been trying to make! If they did go on their accord, then I, too am happy for them. The efforts put into getting revenge on Jeffs is becoming apparent. I wonder how many women were raped while these Police State cops were chasing this “alleged” charge made by an “alleged” person? I'm sick to death of everything being ‘for the children’ as we continue to lose our Constitutional rights.

What worries me and should worry all of you out there in FReedomland is pissing off a neighbor and having them accuse you of ____________ (fill in the blank). Why is there a SWAT TEAM on my front porch at 5 a.m.? Fluffy, did you poop on the neighbor's lawn again? Get on the ground! Get on the ground! Stop resisting! Jeez, not again........

We better wake up before it's too late or this will be an all to familiar scene.

Fourth Amendment:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

“I think it’s dangerous that the government should be empowered to shut down an entire community because it disapproves of them.”

It’s high time somebody put a stop to the massive government sponsored welfare fraud.

Wife number 2 though whatever gets to collect subsidies based on “single mom” status who makes little to no money.
She and her sister-wives collect taxpayer money to help fund the family compound -which is usually a large ranch style home or a collection of closely planted trailers.

The husband/father gets away with polygamy and raising a gazillion kids on the taxpayer dime.

There should be accountability if they’re receiving welfare.

Say what you will about the Constitution and our rights, if they’re taking all that money from taxpayers, they need to answer for it and they’ve forfeited their right to privacy, IMO.

I don’t pay taxes of my own free will and I don’t have any say in where the money goes, but it’s wrong that people are more than willing to take a handout and then demand that it comes with no strings attached.

Why aren’t these guys willing to be the men they’re pretending to and actually work to support their families instead of lazing around screwing every female they can get their hands on?
