ICE agents seize more than 7,000 pounds of marijuana from south Texas home
The drug have an estimated street value of $5.6 million
ESCOBARES, Texas - Agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) early Tuesday morning discovered more than 7,000 pounds of marijuana at a residence here which is just east of Roma; the local street value for the marijuana seized is estimated at $5.6 million.
ICE executed a warrant and discovered 600 bundles of marijuana inside the residence. Two Mexican men were arrested in connection with this case; they will be formally charged Wednesday. Both men face federal charges of possession with intent to distribute. ICE agents are part of the Starr County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force (HIDTA)
“ICE and our law enforcement partners along the border will not tolerate this brazen disregard for U.S. law,” said Jerry Robinette, special agent-in-charge of ICE’s Office of Investigations in San Antonio. “Our ICE agents and officers prevented millions of dollars of marijuana from being distributed throughout our communities.”
The HIDTA Starr County Task Force includes members from the Starr County District Attorney’s Office, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Border Patrol, the Rio Grande Police Department, and agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
This is an ongoing investigation.

Honduran sentenced to 3 years for stealing government checks from the mail
BALTIMORE - A 41-year-old Honduran man was sentenced today to three years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release for receiving stolen property and aggravated identity theft following an extensive investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
The ICE investigation revealed that Juan Antonio Avila and his associates followed postal carriers on their routes, broke into mailboxes and stole U.S. Treasury checks and other government-issued checks. The checks were payment of tax returns and government benefits payments. In April 2006, Avila cashed a stolen check at a liquor store in Prince Frederick, Md., using fraudulent identification. ICE investigators also seized identification-making equipment at a residence at which Avila was staying.
U.S. District Judge William D. Quarles, Jr. determined that at least $70,000 in losses was attributed to Avila.
Others involved in the scheme pleaded guilty and were recently sentenced for receiving stolen property, aggravated identity theft and illegal reentry into the United States.
Jose Matires Carranza-Gonzales, 27, also pleaded guilty on March 26, 2008. He faces a maximum sentence for receipt of stolen property of 10 years in prison, and a mandatory sentence of two years in prison for aggravated identity theft, consecutive to any other sentence imposed, when he is sentenced on June 13, 2008.
Twenty-two year-old Elmin Uliser-Reyes pleaded guilty to his participation in the scheme and was sentenced on April 3, 2008, to three years in prison for receiving stolen property, aggravated identity theft and illegal reentry into the United States. He will be deported after serving his sentence.
ICE agents received assistance from numerous federal and state agencies including the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and Howard County Sheriff’s Office.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “On May 13 about 70 percent of Iraq’s mobile telephone network will cease to operate. This will be a serious blow to the Iraqi economy. Moreover, a shutdown of Iraq’s mobile phone network - upon which our own people in Baghdad rely to communicate, by the way — will greatly diminish our intelligence gathering on al Qaeda in Iraq, thus de-railing our counter-insurgency strategy of relying on tips telephoned to us by Iraqis. And that will cost American lives.
Here’s what’s happening:”

“Teenager facing terrorism charges”

Andrew Ibrahim, of Westbury-on-Trym, was arrested on 17 April. Three controlled explosions were later carried out at his flat.
He has been charged with possession of an explosive substance, the intention to commit terrorism and the possession of articles for terrorist purposes.
He will appear at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
The student is a son of an NHS consultant and was educated at some of Bristol’s top independent schools.
Speaking ahead of his appearance in the London court, Mr Ibrahim’s family spoke of their “shock” at the charges.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “According to police, the teenager has been accused of possessing Hexamethylene Triperoxide Diamine, also known as HMTD, which is an explosive organic chemical compound.
He has also been accused of possessing, among other items, two home-made vests, a quantity of ball bearings, a quantity of air gun pellets, a quantity of nails and screws, wired circuitry, batteries and electric bulb filaments.
Assistant Chief Constable Jackie Roberts said: “This has been a very challenging and complex investigation for Avon and Somerset police with much work still to be done.”
She said “significant amounts of material including numerous computers and associated media” had been recovered.”

“RFE/RL Websites Hit By Mass Cyberattack”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Several websites run by RFE/RL’s broadcast services have been hit by an unprecedented cyberattack, making them inaccessible to the outside world.
The attack, which started on April 26, intially targeted the website of RFE/RL’s Belarus Service, but quickly spread to other sites. Within hours, eight RFE/RL websites (Belarus, Kosovo, Azerbaijan, Tatar-Bashkir, Radio Farda, South Slavic, Russian, and Tajik) were knocked out or otherwise affected.
The “denial-of-service” (DOS) attack was intended to make the targeted website unavailable to its users, according to RFE/RL’s Director of Technology Luke Springer. “The way this is normally done is by flooding the target website with fake requests to communicate, thereby using up all [the website’s] free sources and rendering the site useless to all the legitimate users,” Springer said.
RFE/RL has taken countermeasures and restored full service to most of its Internet sites. The primary target, the Belarus Service, is still affected.
RFE/RL has been hit before by denial-of-service attacks, but this attack was unprecedented in its scale, as RFE/RL websites received up to 50,000 fake hits every second.
Springer says this more sophisticated assault is known as a “distributed denial-of-service” attack, in which “the attacker has made use of other machines, distributed its intentions out to other machines, and then all of these machines attack at the same time.”
DOS attacks are difficult to protect against, and the software required to carry them out is available on the Internet.

Aamer Anwar, who has become one of the country's best-known solicitors in less than 20 years of practice, appeared before three judges in Edinburgh Tuesday, The Scotsman reported. He is the first lawyer in British history to be charged with contempt for statements made outside of court.
Lord Colin Carloway referred the case, charging that Anwar made false and misleading claims in what he described as a "multi-faceted tirade" after the conviction of Mohammed Atif Siddique last year. Siddique, called a "wannabe suicide bomber" by prosecutors, received an eight-year sentence.

“Krekar can stay in Norway”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “After months of quiet diplomacy, the Norwegian government has given up on efforts to send former terrorist-group leader Mullah Krekar back to his homeland.
Krekar, who has been under an expulsion order after being determined a threat to Norway’s national security, initially came to Norway as a refugee from Iraq in the early 1990s.
It later emerged that he was the head of guerrilla group Ansar al-Islam and he repeatedly violated the terms of his asylum by travelling back to northern Iraq to lead guerrilla activities.
Krekar is the only person in Norway ever to have been sentenced to deportation because he is a danger to the countrys security.”

“Osama Bin Ladens son Omar Ossama is banned from Britain”

David Brown
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The son of Osama bin Laden has been banned from entering Britain to live with his new wife because of fears that his presence would cause considerable public concern.
Officials have told Omar Ossama bin Laden that there is evidence that he is still loyal to his father, who is held responsible for the deaths of 52 innocent people in the London bombings of July 7, 2005.
Mr bin Laden, 27, is appealing against the refusal to grant him a visa and says that it is wrong to ban him from Britain on the basis of his parentage and inaccurate media reports about his beliefs.”

“Foreign attachés defy Kassam danger”
By YAAKOV KATZ
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “While Kassams rockets rained down on the western Negev on Tuesday, a group of foreign military officers defied the danger and strolled solemnly through the paths of Kibbutz Yad Mordechai and its Holocaust museum.
The field trip, attended by some 30 military attachés from around the globe, was organized by the IDF’s Foreign Liaison Department ahead of Holocaust Remembrance Day, to be commemorated starting Wednesday night.
The attachés - including officers from the US, Italy, Ecuador, Portugal, China, Brazil and Germany - toured the battlefields surrounding the kibbutz where outnumbered and outgunned Israeli forces staved off an Egyptian army invasion for five days during the War of Independence. The kibbutz is named for Mordechai Anilewicz, leader of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.”
