Cops bust high school beer kegger - root beer, that is
BayNews 9 ^ | Saturday, March 29, 2008 | ROBERT IMRIE

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- Cars lining the street. A house full of young people. A keg and drinking games inside. Police thought they had an underage boozing party on their hands.

But though they made dozens of teens take breath tests, none tested positive for alcohol. That's because the keg contained root beer.

The party was held by a high school student who wanted to show that teens don't always drink alcohol at their parties.

Gee, thanks for your latitude. I guess you've never seen the mad dash that takes place whenever a kid party is busted? A lot of that going around on this thread tonight...

As the police chief said, if they'd had just one of those party kids get into a DUI crash, get hurt in a fight, or vandalize someone's property, they'd have been up the proverbial creek with no paddle. They have no room for error, and a lot to be accountable for.

I really think folks on this thread need to cut them some slack. Cops don't have a lot of time for a sense of humor on the job...every decision they make has a gravity beyond anything we desk jockeys can imagine.

Put yourself in their shoes...every move you make is under a microscope, you can never make a "right" decision (just look at this thread!), you're not paid squat compared to the danger you face and the responsibility you take on every time you go to work. Now multiply that for Sergeants, then evern more for Watch Commanders, then even more for Shift Commanders. Then take all that and add daily butt chewings from dumb-a** City Councilmen and Mayors, threats of lawsuits from some Jesse Jackass type who says you offended this or that, and that's what the Chief puts up with.

Now, all that in mind, can you not see how they would want to make sure there's absolutely no chance whatsoever anything could go wrong when they bust a party that, on first appearances, looks like every other high school party they ever busted? Cut 'em some slack. Or better yet, try doing a ride along some time, and see what they put up with. It'll open your eyes, man.

Ahhh, no doubt you're Oregon's poet laureate, with your cutting wit, brilliant insight and genuine gift for prose. You should write a book...it's sure to be a best seller among the unwashed wanna-be Rasta white boys and braided armpit hair she-males in Eugene. Maybe they'd share a bong hit or two with ya.

By the way, if you have any friends that have moved to Idaho, would you please ask them to go back to Oregon? They're really not wanted here in God's Country.

LOL!

Laugh all you want a**hat, but you and all the other people who think this type of tyranny is ok, as long as it is not directed to you, are going to wake up soon and find out it is directed toward you. How anyone can think that shaking down a party, testing 90 kids when they have obviously been drinking rootbeer, and searching a house, all without a warrant or justifiable probable cause is constitutional, is most likely ready to live in Cuba or Communist China.

You can believe whatever you wish. I would hope that my son would have declined to cooperate with the police if they had no reason (bottles, odors, actions)to have him take a breathalyzer(sp?) in a private home. I am tired of the bullying that goes on.If he was getting in to drive a car and seemed to be acting in an intoxicated manner, maybe. But, not for being at someone’s home.

What is wrong with you? Can’t you express an opinion without being so ugly about it?

If your cops in Wisconsin are bullies, then by all means, it's your responsibility, and the responsibility of your neighbors and townspeople to do something about it. I've lived all across this nation (albeit not Wisconsin), and I've never encountered any police force or sheriff's office that is anywhere near as bad as people are making this situation out to be.

Cops have more responsibility on their shoulders than you or I could ever hope to handle. Every decision they make could cost them their lives, their stripes, or their careers. Even worse, it could get someone else killed. All that in mind, I'm willing to grant them a little leeway.

And incidently, back in my rowdy, wilda** days, I never got "hassled" by a cop when I didn't have it coming. That's not to say it doesn't happen, but if you believe the exaggerations of folks on this thread, it happens 24/7/365, everywhere in the nation. Sorry, but that doesn't wash.

Nice work...kinda reminds me of the “designated decoy” routines people sometimes use.

I'm more than civil when someone is civil with me. I haven't been rude to you, have I? When someone is bound and determined to be a jerk, I give it right back to 'em, in spades. Don't you believe in fighting fire with fire?

And Mr. Oregon, did you notice how I pinged you? That's called courtesy...now you have the opportunity to address my comments about you with more of your brilliance and folksy wisdom. You really should try it...courtesy runs rampant here in Idaho.

Yeah you struck me as a big McCain backer. He's so much better than Fred, at least in your mind.

And just what do you have against the Boy Scouts that you want them out??? Are you with the ACLU and upset that they won't let homosexuals into their private organization???

So, it is OK for a police officer to stop a young man walking down the street because they put a paper bag inside their sweatshirt? Then, when it was just food, to tell them to take off their shoes? That is what they do here. The kids know that a disorderly conduct ticket can be had for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. That is a ticket for when they cannot come up with anything else. Granted, my son did not get a ticket that time, but he figured he would. When the cop asked him what was in the bag, he said mashed potatoes. The cop was not happy when it was shown to be the case.

I used to respect the police a lot more. Even had the view you do of not being stopped unless it was appropriate. Now I know better. And, when a 911 call takes 2 hours to handle, that is a problem. Oh, and our former chief did resign after the hoopla of being found out about drinking while driving and on duty, and then throwing the beer cans out the window. They know no one can do a thing. If the paper hadn’t gotten a hold of it, he would still be out there. And, don’t get me started on when the teenager disappeared a few years ago. He was found dead right after the cops declared the kids were hiding him as a runaway.

I guess you could say I have a bad attitude about our boys in blue. In my book, you get respect when you earn it. Don’t tell me to do something about it. We know it doesn’t work that way.

Gosh...I'm hurt.

You should know, given how long you've been on FReep, that to comment on someone and not ping them so they can see what you're saying is kinda like talking about someone behind their back. Pretty gutless. If you have something to say, by all means, say to my face.

Sorry, bucko...Tancredo supporter here. At least we knew he was in the race and awake.

Boy Scouts? Sorry...your obviously superior sense of humor has just sailed clean over my head. Or did it just crash and burn like the rest of your attempts at humor? Hmmmm...gonna have to ponder that one.

Oh, sorry...that means think about it. Forgot...Oregon.

Of course juveniles came out in torrents, announcing that cars would soon be towed tends to have that effect. This was caused by the police announcement, not their mere presence.

"Juveniles began coming out of the house after the officer used his squad car's loudspeaker to warn that cars would soon be towed, Officer Jason Rasmussen wrote in his report."

That's immaterial. The fact is, there was an obvious party going on, and experience teaches police officers whenever you have a kid party, there's likely illegal drinking, drug use, drug selling, etc. going on. It's just like a traffic cop pulling over a speeder, and getting a whiff of what smells like marijuana coming from the passenger area. He has probable cause to search the car from then on.

Now, it may turn out to be one of those Beedie (sp?) cigaretes they sell in Saudi, that sure as hell smell like pot, even though they aren't. Does that mean the officer's wrong for having searched the car if he finds nothing? No, it doesn't.

Just as the cops did nothing wrong by searching the house and giving all those breath tests, after being called to a loud party with cars parked illegally, seeing the kids leaving the house (granted, I'm presuming it was more than just those parked illegally who went outside/left the party/ran away), and kids inside drinking from red plastic cups that are commonly found at keggers! Probable cause. Had they stopped the search and left the house after discovering those cups held root beer, then something really did happen afterward, they'd have been up the creek.

Cut 'em some slack...they have a job not many are willing to do, and punk-a** high schoolers trying to play "gotcha" doresn't make their job any easier.
