TAMPA, Fla. -- In the past two weeks, three female teachers have been arrested in the Tampa, Fla., area, accused of having sex with male students.
First came the arrest of a middle school math teacher, Stephanie Ragusa, 28. She was charged with having sex with a 14-year-old, authorities said.
Investigators monitored phone calls between teacher and student in which Ragusa allegedly acknowledged having sex with the boy.
Last Thursday, high school honors English teacher Mary Jo Spack, 45, also was arrested. She is accused of meeting a 17- and an 18-year-old student at a liquor store and leading them to a motel room, where more students allegedly joined the party.
Spack was reportedly overheard having sex with one teen in the shower, police said.
"I just can't believe it's happening," said one unidentified Tampa-area parent. "I don't know what to think, or what's going through their heads."
And on Monday night, substitute teacher Lisa Marinelli, 40, a married mother of two, was arrested by sheriff's deputies and charged with unlawful sex with a minor. The 17-year-old victim told detectives he had sex with Marinelli 10 times. Authorities said they believe the boy.
"There's phone records, the text messages, the underwear, their statements," said Pasco County sheriff's detective Michelle March.
The arrests stirred memories of another notorious Tampa teacher, Debra Lafave. In June 2004, the middle school teacher was arrested for having sex with a 14-year-old male student in her car, her condo and her classroom.
The combination of Lafave's pinup girl looks and the young age of her victim made the story an instant national sensation.
Therapist Karen Duncan specializes in treating sexually abused women and children. She believes it's not that female teachers are abusing their students more frequently, but rather we are more aware of it when the crime happens.
"That the cultural belief, you know, that boys can't be victims, therefore females can't be offenders, has been starting to be challenged (more) now than it was 30 years ago," she said.

The quality of the female teacher has changed. When I was in school, my female teachers were extremely smart and very sharp! Today they would have gone into law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, accounting, earned MBAs etc.
Today, students in the colleges of education have the lowest SATs, ACTs, and GREs on campus. They aren't exactly top drawer material.
Sounds toxic to me! So...Why are parents still subjecting their children to this environment? Must be the free babysitting.

When I was 15, these would all look Aphrodite’s to me. I would have done any of them them. Now,,,,, not so much. So,, at 15, none Guilty! Now, two guilty and one needs more glamor shots.
The thing is, there was NO scandal at my school, everything was kept very quiet, the parents didn’t want the kids embarrassed in some cases, in others, the parents never knew. This was the sixties, and sex was just not talked about. The kids just blamed the other kids. We thought that the kids were stupid to get involved in anything like that (except the acolyte class, who were too young to be blamed - they just showed up in public school the next week)
In some ways, I think that the kids are better off being more sophisticated than the kids were in the sixties. They at least know when something is wrong. For that reason, I’m no sure that the teachers are as much to blame as they were then.
There were quite a few divorced female teachers in my high school who could very easily have been the type to mess with their male students. They even showed up at school inebriated a time or two. The male teachers were far more wary of female students than the female teachers were of the male students. These teachers were known to “party.” This was in the mid-80s.
When I was a student in a College of Education, I knew lots of soon-to-be teachers who I could easily see as seducers of young males.
Home schooling would be my choice, today, if I had it to do all over again. You have to start the homeschooling early, though, or at least I would have had to. My kids were was too social to accept homeschooling, after they got a taste of public school. My kids loved going to school, just to see the other kids.
You/they were lucky, I hated school K-12. I even walked out of the graduation ceremony once I had my diploma in my hand.

Where were these teachers when I was in school?
I remember once, when my son was in kindergarten, he over heard his older sister saying that she didn’t want to go to school (that was a completely different situation), and he was just amazed. He looked at her, wide eyed, and said, “You don’t like school????” “I love school, you learn something new every day. Things changed a little by the time he got to high school, but he still liked seeing the kids. He was just very popular. I think that life is just easier and more pleasant for very good looking people, especially if they are nice on top of it.
