I just happened to catch “Red Skies of Montana” (1952) for the first time on TCM last week. Richard played a smoke jumper who lost his crew in a fire. Even tho’ I consider myself a Widmark fan, I was surprised at just how good that movie was.

Mr. Widmark was perhaps my Mother’s favorite actor when I was growing up. I’ll always have a place for Mr. Widmark in my heart.

One of the few actors I really liked. He always reminded me of my father.

A long life, well lived...we dare not ask for more than that.

RIP, Mr. Widmark, and thanks for the great performances.

Unfortunately, one passage in the article stood out to me...

A passionate liberal Democrat, Mr. Widmark played a bigot who baits a black doctor in Joseph Mankiewicz’s “No Way Out” (1950). He was so embarrassed by the character that after every scene he apologized to the young actor he was required to torment, Sidney Poitier.

I think that if it embarassed him so much, then a man of more integrity would have turned down the role. I've quit jobs where they asked me to do things that I didn't agree with.

However, this assumes that the reporter got the story right, and it wasn't embellished the least bit. A big assumption, to be sure.

I mostly know him from the episode of “I Love Lucy” he appeared in while the Ricardos were in Hollywood.

> “A passionate liberal Democrat”

He was an old-school actor. He kept his political opinions to himself off the screen. I never knew if he was liberal or conservative before this.

I didn't realize he was still alive. What an underrated actor. One of my father's favorites.

The last of his kind in Hollywood.

Years ago I stumbled across him filming the TV series Madigan in New York (somewhere on the West Side in the 80s). He played a cool, hardened NYPD detective.

Despite broad daylight, maybe 10:30AM, there were lights set up around a pimpmobile parked on the street. Widmark was waiting on the street for the scene to be set, smoking almost constantly, walking up and down the sidewalk.

They finally got the shot setup, a few extras strolling down the street and Madigan talks to the pimp in the car. All of this setup and filming takes more than an hour. I was somewhat bored but curious to see if there was to be any “action” but that was it.

I later watched the episode on TV and found that the scene I watched them film lasted maybe 10 seconds—and it took more than an hour to film. Not too glamorous.

Even though he was a staunch liberal Democrat and supportive of gun control, Richard Widmark made some very entertaining movies. A personal on-screen favorite of mine.

RIP, Mr.Widmark.
