A powerful US politician added her voice yesterday to the worldwide chorus condemning Chinas crackdown in Tibet and demanded an international investigation.
The situation in Tibet is a challenge to the conscience of the world, Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, said as she strolled arm-in-arm with the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the restive Himalayan region.

Anyone out there?
The GOP won’t criticise China because they’re still waiting for all that ‘free trade’ to magically convert China into a paradigm of civil rights.
You forgot your sarcasm tag?
/s
Nancy either present a bill to revoke MFN or STFU.
This is really cruel of Pelosi, to the Tibetans it appears that the big, powerful USA is sympathetic to their cause, whereas in reality Nancy Pelosi has no power whatsoever to change US foreign policy toward China at the current time. She is grandstanding to make herself look good, when actually this is meaningless. Now if the Secretary of State went over there, that would be different. These Tibetans have suffered enough, and political gestures like this devoid of any real help are only going to cause confusion, mistakenly stoke the Tibetan cause and therefore possibly even increase the Chinese crack-down.
Why should she STFU?
Because she’s embarrassing Republicans?
They deserve it!
Where are Republicans??
Bailing out Wall St.
Talk is cheap.
Where are(the)Republicans??
We'd all like to know.
Let us also ask the Bush admin to put China back in the human rights violators list (from which the ChiCom barbarians were removed last week).
I’m not so sure my sarcasm tag applies.
Ironic. Eh?
Communist saying bad things about how other Communists treat their slaves? GOP should be all over this. Pull out of olympics, trade halt, comparisons to demosocialists, etc.
The thing is that the GOP sold their collective soul to Wall Street who finds that money means more than a few dead Tibetans. The remarkable thing in this is that Pelosi is taking a stand that puts her at odds with most of the radical left in her own party. Dare I call it perhaps a principled stand, but there it is. The truly sad thing, as someone else noted, was that Pelosi beat the GOP to the punch on this one.
Peter,
I agree. I have been to Tibet on a mountain climbing expedition. The Chinese treatment of Tibetans, and tourists too, is horrible. I can’t describe how bad in words.
Indeed....unfortunately.
“...I suspect that the Republicans are a bit smarter than to run off their collective mouths before they have a plan of some sort.”

This seems like an appropriate sort of event, for some serious Republican soul searching.
Are Republicans mute in the face of communist aggression because they’re smarter than run off their mouths before they have a plan,...
or have Republicans just honestly become so beholden to the “free trade” monster, they have now effectively been bought and paid for by, of all things, the Chinese Communist Party?
The China of today is very much like a Hollywood movie set: it may well appear to look like something familiar (civilization, for instance) but just under the surface you find that it is merely a construct or even a camoflauge.
And the Chinese get hideously angry when confronted with the facts of the barbarism of their society and the corruption and avarice of their government. Ironically, they do not see that their very outrage is, itself, a facet and a proof to my original observation.
I agree with what you saw in Tibet. I was climbing an 8,000 meter peak on the Nepal/Tibet border from the Tibet side. Don’t want to say which one or which year because one of the people I talked to was a Tibetan interpreter working for the Chinese “Tibetan Mountaineering Association” which is a Chinese Government organization and easily as arrogant as the Chinese Military. The interpreter asked me many questions about life outside Tibet and I asked as many about life in Tibet. Needless to say that the Chinese brutality is largely unreported. The Chinese military routinely kills people right on the spot. I was shown a spot where unauthorized traders were shot. There were 7.62X39 AK-47 shell casings all over the ground in this spot. The Tibetan people and also Nepalese people were so friendly, nice and gracious to us climbers. The Chinese military really liked to herd us around at gunpoint. They don’t know how to use the safety or keep their finger off the trigger either. There must be a huge Chinese section in Hell!
