According to multiple clubhouse sources, the Red Sox [team stats] will be holding a players-only meeting later this morning concerning the issue regarding the coaches potentially not being paid the $40,000 allocated the players.

The sources indicated that the players will be issuing a mandate to Major League Baseball that if the coaches aren’t paid, then the team will not be getting on the plane later today for Japan.

I agree. It’s a tough way to start the season.

I didn’t like the idea of this Japan trip anyway. Who wants a season opener halfway around the world? That’s a heck of a road trip to kick off the season.

It took awhile to figure out what was going on since the original story was pretty poor. Basically noted by “Dave” in the comments.

“When the coaches and players all agreed to their contracts, playing in Japan wasn’t part of the deal. MLB is having them do extra work to make MLB more money, it’s perfectly reasonable for them to expect compensation. It’s MLB’s responsibility to pay both the players AND coaches for this, suggesting that the players should pay the coaches for them is ridiculous.”

Japan has been playing BB for a long time and American teams traveling to Japan to play a game is fine. Last week, both the Dodger and Padres were in China playing two games.

MLB is trying to expand its market and the players (employees) should not be paying for MLB marketing costs. The MLB if it wants coaches to go along should pay them.

No kidding. Look what it did to the Yanks a few years ago, and look at what that stupid world baseball classic did as well. Pitchers simply aren't ready to throw meaningful games yet.

Red Sox and eggs and beer at 6 AM.
That is the way I will be starting my season!

But the flip side is playing in Asian would open up endorsement marketing opportunities for the star players and an inside tract for the marginal players to continue their careers.

It was last year’s Japan trip that made Jason Giambi so sick, and cost him half a season...

What? Oh... It was steroids?

Nevermind!!!

They get paid millions of dollars to play a kids game. Shut up, get on the plane and go play.

That about sums it up. Their payroll is over $155 million.

They are saying that if MLB doesn’t pay their coaches that they won’t play.

I think those involved in the game there are fully aware of the star players and the marginal players but that does not justify them having to pay the coaches that are simply other employees of the same company.

This screwed up the Yankees for a whole month last year. Not that that’s a bad thing.

Depends on what the contract for the coaches says. If the coaches don’t like it they should form their own Union like the players.

Latest, from Boston Dirt Dogs"

Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell confirmed to the Boston Globe's Jackie MacMullan that the team voted unanimously this morning not to make the scheduled trip to Japan or play its final exhibition game against the Blue Jays this afternoon unless the coaches, training staff, and equipment staff were going to be compensated for making the trip to Japan.

Of course, that's an excellent thing. But we don't want to screw *us* up.

I have tickets to the April 2 game in Oakland. Can't wait to wear my new jersey (thanks, Santa ;-).

Nice work ... if you can get it.
