Listening is believing - even the most liberal members cannot get away from the inevitable conclusion that the 2A is an individual right not limited to soldiering. If they limited a decision to just that point, Roberts could have a 9-0 decision. It will be interesting to see how much he's willing to give up in the quest for a broader decision, say, one that addresses scrutiny.
One thing we can be assured of is that Roberts knows Heller will be considered a top 5 decision from the last 225 years; he's going for the next 225 - shooting for the ages (pun intended), so to speak. So, in that regard, it's best to have the strongest majority possible and let the slow hand of time resolve the rest.
