McCain’s record on judicial nominees does not impress me that much, nor will it, I suspect, impress a democrat controlled congress.

He’s worse than uninspiring. He crafted McCain-Feingold, which some say was specifically designed to defang the NRA. He’s been involved in numerous other anti-rights schemes. Nevertheless, as you say, he’s no doubt marginally better than whomever he will oppose in the general.
