She fits right in, but he joined long before he ever met her, from all the timelines I've seen.

He joined for the mundane political benefits it would bestow upon an aspiring black politician in Chicago.

Same reason a certain type of lawyer, Realtor, or car salesman look for a "prosperous" church to join.
