IN this case I thnk that you are misreading what you are seeing The (R) refers to the fact that Eliot is on the right in the picture, and in this day and age one cannot tell whehter someone is male or female by the name or the spelling.
It should have read Eliot Spitser (pictured right) ....
I know it’s a subliminal message but in the next sentence it claerly states the he is a democRAT

That's inconceivable. There are plenty of other ways to signal Elliot Spitzer is the one standing on the right without using a capital R especially when the wife is identified in the same comment.
