The messages behind many Soviet propaganda posters were, of course, abhorrent. That being said, such posters possess undeniable merit, not only as craft objects (many early 20th Centrury posters were silkscreened by hand), but as items of historical interest — and, in some cases, as works of art.

Wagner was, by all accounts, an anti-semite, a pagan, and an egomaniac — an all-around awful person. His music, however, is beautiful — fraught with meaning, imbued with cultural significance, and undeniably art. The same is true of the Fairey Obama posters.

Most American political graphics are amateurish, insipid, and just plain bad. It is refreshing to see something besides the usual stars, swooshes, check marks, and candidate mug shots that typify election propaganda in America, even if it is for a socialist candidate.
