Trappings: Stories of Women, Power and Clothing is a study of women and their clothing choices. It's the result of asking nearly 600 women in 15 states one simple question: "What do you wear that makes you feel powerful?"
The pair started working on the project in 2001, when they decided to take a serious look at the state of feminism. But how to talk about a "hot-button topic" like feminism, Ludwig says, without devolving into black and white generalities? "Clothing," she says, "is an entry into a power-charged conversation." After all, everyone has to get dressed in the morning, Ludwig says. For the book, interview sessions were modeled after classic Tupperware parties. "It's not a secret confession," Tiffany says.
Ludwig and Piechocki say that a surprising number of women were immediately revealing, even though in 90 percent of the interview sessions, they were talking to people they'd never met. One memorable response was a "yes dress," a slinky number that got a businesswoman the answers she wanted. But Ludwig and Piechocki also heard from women that their power item was a lab coat, a head wrap or a tattoo.

Navy blue, skirted suit. No pants, they make me feel dumpy.
Navy Blue skirted suit and no panties?
Hmmm...
I prefer "polished" too. A woman doesn't have to look like a man: paint suits, tatoos, etc. to get what she wants.
Powered Armor?
I think you need to put your glasses on...;) That was PANTS, not panties. Although to avoid the lines, just the pantyhose is good under that navy blue suit.
Recent ex-Obama advisor and "Monster"-lady Samantha always wears a Power suit...
How else would Madeline Albright impress Kim Jung IL?
“Actually mentioned enjoying the personal distinction that the large, colorful, “tramp stamp” tatoo on her lower back and higher buttocks gave her.”
Oh my gosh, is that what those sl*tty looking lower back/upper buttocks tatoos are called?!? What a GREAT name!! I’ll have to remember the term “tramp stamp.” (I don’t get out much LOL....)
Shorts and a t-shirt in the summer, a sweatsuit in the winter.
Doesn’t sound powerful to you? Well, I am the absolute dictator of my domain no matter *what* I’m wearing! Not having to dress up to anyone else’s expectations is just one of the powers I exercise. I can also take naps when I want to and start drinking early in the afternoon, if I choose.
Camo is good, I like to women in it. LOL
“A woman dresses for success by focusing on how to look POWERFUL or perhaps AUTHORITATIVE or even SEXY.”
It depends on the woman. As much as as the FemiNazis deny this truth, BEAUTY IS POWER, and beautiful women naturally wield power over men which homely women can’t. But a woman needs to remember that power acquired mainly through beauty (not professionalism or competence) is a double-edged sword. When beauty wanes with age (as it always does), competence and professionalism should strongly remain.
My blue scrub top with the whales on it over a pair of baggy white scrubs.......I’m a playuh
Apparently, clothing is the face a woman puts on in the morning, to show what she wants to be for that day.
Guys, take note.
I always asked my female coworkers what they though of our female boss and acted accordingly.
It doesn't make me feel particularly powerful, but it makes those terrorists think twice. ;-)
I like sling arms too. :)
