Grand Gestures, Hot Air and Cold Water

Who says that the issue of global warming is a matter of science, not faith? Just last week, Mayor Gavin Newsom proved belief trumps data. The Chronicle reported that a San Francisco Public Utilities Commission study found that the giant turbines he wanted to put underwater below the Golden Gate Bridge would cost way too much money to install and maintain. They would generate power at a cost of 80 cents to $1.40 per kilowatt hour -- as opposed to Pacific Gas and Electric's 12 cents per hour commercial rate. It seems the turbines would produce only one or two megawatts of power -- not the 38 megawatts Newsom envisioned.

Newsom was unfazed. "I don't care about the arguments against it. I care about the arguments for it," Newsom told Chronicle reporter Cecilia Vega.

There's more of more non-economic projects coming that will be paid with higher taxes, higher utilities, and higher gas prices. Hidden are the indirect costs from more expensive products because of mandated energy standards where the marginal cost exceeds any marginal savings so far that the products will expire long before consumers see a payback the extra cost. These are everyday products like light bulbs and air conditioners.

When will the public wake up and say, "Enough!"

""I don't care about the arguments against it. I care about the arguments for it"

Arguments in favor of the world being flat:

1. In some place it sure looks flat
2. Lots of people for lots of years believed the world to be flat
3. It's much easier for an elephant to balance a plate-shaped world than a spherical one.

Gaven’s missing a great opportunity. San Francisco is the hometown to those ‘take back the streets’ bike riding fanatics. All he has to do is hook up a bunch of exercise bikes to generators and convince them to do their riding in an environmentally responsible way. We get free wattage, they get to feel superior, and the commute is no longer subject to their disruptive mass demonstrations. Win, win, win.

“I don’t care about the arguments against it. I care about the arguments for it,”

If ever there was a phrase that encapsulated the liberal mentality, that’s it.

Nothing wrong with using the tides to generate power, it's just that turbines are not the way to do it.

The Mayor needs to temper his enthusiasm and do a lot more research before committing to an unproven technology.

Bring back the streetcars, and rig them to generate electricity on the downhill runs.

Actually I made this same statement 20 yrs ago to friend. the difference being I thought prisoners should be used for generation purposes. I figured 8 to 10 hours pedalling they would be too tired to cause problems.

There was a case where the Green party of Germany bragged for years how they could turn off all of the nuclear power plants. So when the left-wing party won and needed a partner...here came the Greens and their agenda. They were given several cabinet posts....amongst them....the utilities seat. So they started the immediate order to cut nuclear plants off within a couple of years. The news media made no comment and accepted this as fact.

Some power engineers sat down and figured the whole Green plan out and then announced that blackouts were going to occur within two years. The news media woke up and asked some stupid questions...then the Greens rapidly met and agreed their plan was screwed up entirely. The plant closures were put on the back burner.

As far as most folks can see...the Greens and their ideas...are half-baked. Few truly work.

“would generate power at a cost of 80 cents to $1.40 per kilowatt hour”

Hmmm. At $1.40 per KW hour, I would have to cut my electricity usage down to .7 KW hour per day. Only about a 90% reduction in usage.

What Greens and most ‘Progressives’ fail to understand is that, contrary to their belief system, the reason things are done they way they're done isn't because we're stupid, evil, or amoral, it's because that's the way that works. Their little elitist morality play doesn't allow any room for that concept. So, act two, the part where they get to show us the merits of their superior value system, is always highly entertaining.

The Green Party was created by the KGB with the intent of disrupting political process in Europe. ( and promoting socialism )

Using a bit of conspiracy theory to extrapolate, let's take the anti-nuke platform of the Green party and see where it goes.
By resisting the development of Nuclear Energy throughout Europe, the USSR - KGB - Greens managed to continue Europe's dependence on Oil.
Oil was just being discovered in the Caspian Sea area at that time, and the Soviets understood that those reserves were a badly needed "gold mine" for their economy.
However, a nuclear Europe wouldn't be very dependent on oil.
Therefore, create a political movement to stop the conversion to nuclear energy until such time as those russian oil reserves could be exploited.

Move to present day.
Russia is making Billions, if not Trillions from Caspian Sea Oil.
Europe, which severely constrained development of nuclear energy, is now heavily dependent on that russian oil, and russia has not only an economic strangle hold on most of Europe, but an Energy strangle hold as well.
Russia can literally freeze out most of Europe and destroy it's economy simply by with-holding heating oil in the winter.
Russia can charge what it likes, and make money to rebuild it's military and political power throughout Eastern Europe, as well as making inroads into Western Europe.

All this because the KGB started a whacko environmentalist movement in Europe called the Green Party some 40 years ago.

You can take off your tinfoil hat now.
Or can You?

So, act two, the part where they get to show us the merits of their superior value system, is always highly entertaining.

So entertaining that some folks actually laugh to death.

See DDT and malaria.

But the Greens never seemed the least bit bothered by those millions of needless deaths.

My own theory of what drives these people is in three parts.

Part 1. They are indoctrinated to hate their own culture.

Part 2. They begin to hate themselves for being part of that culture.

Part 3. They move on to the next logical step --- hating all of humanity.
