Shawn Sage long dreamed of joining the military, and watching "Full Metal Jacket" last year really sold him on becoming a Marine.

Not the audience reaction Kubrick was hoping for.

The legendary American filmmaker Samuel Fuller saw ‘Full Metal Jacket’ upon release and walked out muttering to a friend “Kubrick just another g%#-damned recruiting film.”

What's funny is that the liberal mind cannot understand why people join the military at all, and they certainly cannot understand why a movie like "Full Metal Jacket" would actually inspire someone to want to join the Marines. For them, seeing the rough discipline of the basic training part of the movie would be enough to convince them that the military is evil. They can't understand that there are actually young men out there who want to serve their country, and want to find out what they're made of at the same time.

I must have watched Full Metal Jacket 20 times before I went into (Army) Basic. It got me pumped up.

I'm not sure about that. I haven't seen any statements by Kubrick that would indicate he hoped it would be an "anti-war" movie.
