Thanks,...other news from Iraq:

Haditha Bombshell: Pentagon Had Secret Committee

*************************EXCERPT Intro to FR Thread*************************

A shadow legal body was set up by the Defense Department to manipulate the prosecutions of U.S. Marines accused of massacring Iraqi civilians in Haditha in 2005.

That’s the bombshell disclosure from the Thomas More Law Center, a national public interest law firm that is representing one of the accused Marines, Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani.

And it could prove to be the most damning piece of evidence showing the political motivations behind the ongoing prosecutions of the Haditha Marines.

Thank God, I have never had to face a burglar, but I know what I would do if it ever happened......I would treat them just like the mountain lions and wolves that I have had to deal with. (I did have an encounter with a purse thief in the Berlin airport a few years ago. No gun, but my knee to his groin dropped him pretty quickly....(karate classes) I got a round of applause from the other passengers in queue. I am one tough old lady. No brag, just fact. LOL!

I’m sorry to hear that you have had to deal with what you did.

Our homes should be havens, not fortresses.

I’m sure it is tough call for law enforcement to choose who should have guns and who should not. But they are not getting mine!

Most leos actually appreciate lawful and legally licensed gun owners.

Hey, you can protect me!

Like I said, I’ve never shot anyone and am a persuasive person.
I hope it stays that way the rest of my natural life.

Both times, it was two men (regarding the burglaries).

I should add, my husband was the one who caught the last set of burglars.
I was just his assistant.

"FBI agents say that they have ruled out terrorism."

How?? I hate when they print that having no idea really if it's true or not. They're foreign citizens with a stolen car and a bomb - in my eyes that's terrorism!

TWO MEN SENTENCED TO LENGTHY PRISON TERMS FOR ROLES IN FAIRFIELD COUNTY HEROIN TRAFFICKING RING

Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that two men were sentenced today by Senior United States District Judge Alan H. Nevas in Bridgeport for their participation in a decade-long conspiracy to distribute large quantities of heroin throughout Fairfield County. MIGUEL NEGRON, 26, of Price Street, Bridgeport, was sentenced to 120 months of imprisonment, followed by five years of supervised release and LEONIDAS DEJESUS PEREZ-DOMINGUEZ, also known as “Loca,” 42, a citizen of Colombia last residing in Queens, New York, was sentenced to 168 months of imprisonment. PEREZ-DOMINGUEZ faces deportation to Colombia following service of his prison term.

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, Edwin Sanchez, also known as “Trix,” was the leader of a drug organization that provided large amounts of heroin between 1996 through 2006 to drug-trafficking gangs based in Bridgeport, including members of the Jones Family and the Frankie Estrada Organization. Between 2003 and 2006, Sanchez employed NEGRON to process multi-kilogram-sized quantities of heroin and to package it in small plastic bags that were stamped with unique brand names, including “Son of Sam,” “Helta Skelta,” “Step It Up,” and “Son of Satan.” Between 2000 and 2006, PEREZ-DOMINGUEZ was the organization’s principal heroin supplier and provided Sanchez with more than 30 kilograms of heroin, which was often hidden in computer monitors, bread makers, and other household appliances when PEREZ-DOMINGUEZ transported the heroin to Sanchez.

The investigation of this matter included interviews of persons with personal knowledge of the Sanchez organization’s inner workings, extensive use of the federal grand jury, controlled purchases of narcotics by cooperating witnesses, physical and videotaped surveillance of the subjects, and court-authorized wiretaps.

NEGRON, PEREZ-DOMINGUEZ and Sanchez each pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin. Sanchez awaits sentencing.

As a condition of their guilty pleas, Sanchez and several of his co-defendants have agreed to forfeit real estate, numerous luxury automobiles, jewelry, and firearms.

This matter has been investigated by members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation – Bridgeport Violent Crimes Safe Streets Task Force, consisting of federal agents and local and state officers from the Connecticut State Police, and the Bridgeport, Trumbull, and Norwalk Police Departments. These cases are being prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Alina P. Reynolds and Assistant U.S. Attorney Harold H. Chen.

“Jewish groups placed on security alert”
Published: 03/26/2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Citing an increase in threats and attacks, a U.S. Jewish security network warned its members to be alert to a “new set of circumstances.”

“The convergence and timing of several events coupled with escalating tensions in the Middle East create a new set of circumstances that have commanded our attention,” said the alert issued Tuesday by the Secure Community Network. “The current heightened threat environment poses challenges and issues, particularly when there is a need for a balanced approach to securing our institutions, agencies and organizations.”

The alert cited among other circumstances the end of the 40-day mourning period for Imad Mughniyeh, the Hezbollah terrorist chief assassinated in Syria, and a call by Ayman al-Zawahiri, an al-Qaida chief, to “strike the interests of Jews” in retaliation for escalating violence in the Gaza Strip.

Israel has denied a role in the Mughniyeh killing, but Hezbollah blames it nonetheless and has threatened to retaliate by attacking Jews outside of Israel.

“In the past 30 days, we have noted an increase in reported threats and attacks in the United States,” the alert said. “While most of these incidents are isolated, and many are still under active investigation, the increase in frequency and brazenness of threats and attacks are a cause to be more vigilant and conscientious about your security preparedness and operations.”

The alert lists seven threats and attacks since Feb. 14, and notes that the Department of Homeland Security has instructed its officials to inspect Jewish sites across the country.”

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Wed Mar 26 2008 15:22:47 GMT-0700 (PDT).

ALGERIA

March 26, 2008

This Travel Warning updates information on the security situation in Algeria. The threat from terrorism in many areas of the country continues to pose a significant security risk. The Department of State cautions Americans who reside in or travel to Algeria to take prudent security measures while in the country. U.S. citizens should avoid overland travel in Algeria without security escort, including tourist excursions in the Sahara. This supersedes the Travel Warning issued on December 23, 2007.

The Department of State urges U.S. citizens who travel to Algeria to evaluate carefully the risks posed to their personal safety. Small-scale terrorist attacks including bombings, false roadblocks, kidnappings, ambushes, and assassinations occur regularly. Since early 2007, use of vehicle-borne suicide bomb attacks has emerged as a terrorist tactic in Algeria, including in the capital. Suicide car bomb attacks in December 2007 targeted the UN headquarters and the Algerian Constitutional Council in Algiers. The attacks occurred in residential areas where many diplomatic missions are located. The group that claimed credit for the December 11 attacks has pledged more attacks against foreign targets, and specifically American targets.

The U.S. Government considers the potential threat to U.S. Embassy personnel assigned to Algiers sufficiently serious to require them to live and work under significant security restrictions. These practices limit, and may occasionally prevent, the movement of U.S. Embassy officials in certain areas of the country. The Government of Algeria requires U.S. Embassy personnel to seek permission to travel to the Casbah within Algiers or outside the province of Algiers and to have a security escort. Travel to the military zone established around the Hassi Messaoud oil center requires Government of Algeria authorization. Daily movement of Embassy personnel in Algiers is limited, and prudent security practices are required at all times. Travel by personnel to areas of the city outside the center requires prior coordination with the Embassy’s Regional Security Office. American visitors are encouraged to contact the Embassy’s Consular Section for the most recent safety and security information concerning travel in the city of Algiers.

The Department of State recommends that U.S. citizens avoid overland travel in Algeria without security escort, including tourism excursions in the Sahara. The Department of State cautions Americans who reside or travel in Algeria to take prudent security measures while in the country, including making provisions for reliable and experienced logistical support. Visitors to Algeria are advised to stay only in hotels where adequate security is provided. All visitors to Algeria should remain alert and adhere to prudent security practices such as avoiding predictable travel patterns and maintaining a low profile.

Americans living or traveling in Algeria are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department’s travel registration web site, https://travelregistration.state.gov, and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Algeria. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy or Consulate to contact them in case of emergency. The U.S. Embassy is located at 5 Chemin Cheikh Bachir El-Ibrahimi, B.P. 408 (Alger-gare) 16000, in the capital city of Algiers. The telephone number is [213] 770 08 20 00, which can also be reached after hours. The fax number is [213] 21 9822 99.

Updated information on travel and security in Algeria may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada, or for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. For further information, please consult the Country Specific Information for Algeria and the Worldwide Caution, which are available on the Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet website at http://travel.state.gov.

Two wounded as Kassam rockets slam into Sderot
By ITAMAR SHARON AND JPOST.COM STAFF

Two people were lightly wounded and nine were in shock after Palestinians fired a volley of Kassam rockets at Sderot on Wednesday night. Six rockets were lobbed at Sderot, two of them landing inside the town. Security forces were trying to locate the other four rockets.

In the morning, an Israeli was lightly wounded when Palestinian gunmen in the Gaza Strip fired at a group of farmers near Ein Hashlosha.

IDF officials said the man was being treated at a medical clinic in the kibbutz.

Earlier, eight rockets were fired into Israel on Wednesday.

One of the rockets hit a backyard in a kibbutz in the western Negev Wednesday morning, causing some damage to surrounding buildings.
