Why not leave out the large battery, and just use the diesel running at some optimal rpm to generate power for the electric? Like a locomotive does, or some ships?
Seems like it ought to work.

Because the purpose of the diesel electric system on a locomotive is not economy.

The large battery weighs 99 pounds.
Basically, the battery pack is made up of 184 D-cell Ni-cad flashlight batteries wired in series and mounted in a sealed pack.
Good for full power for about 1.5 minutes.

How about something that uses new technology, and doesn't look like crap?
