WASHINGTON -- So now all Republican political calculations come down to one question: Will it be possible to successfully criticize a candidate whom even Hillary Clinton, the toughest partisan in American politics, could not wound?
Barack Obama will not be defeated by taunts about his middle name, which gain his juvenile persecutors all the sympathy of a schoolyard bully. He will not be defeated by sinister interpretations of his hypnotic popularity -- people generally (and unsurprisingly) are attracted to the handsome, genial and eloquent. And in a change election, Obama will not be defeated because he seems inexperienced -- his freshness is actually a qualification.
But Obama may be defeated in the end because he is inexperienced -- because he has already made some serious errors in the primaries that will exact a cost in the general election.
Obama's 100-day agenda would be designed, in part, to improve America's global image. But there is something worse than being unpopular in the world -- and that is being a pleading, panting joke. By simultaneously embracing appeasement, protectionism and retreat, President Obama would manage to make Jimmy Carter look like Teddy Roosevelt.
Which is why President Obama would probably not take these actions -- at least in the form he has pledged. Sitting behind the Resolute desk is a sobering experience that makes foolish campaign promises seem suddenly less binding.
But it is a bad sign for a candidate when the best we can hope is for him to violate his commitments. And that's a good sign for John McCain.

God help us all.
Obama belongs on American Idol, not in the presidential race.
“Barack Obama will not be defeated by taunts about his middle name, which gain his juvenile persecutors all the sympathy of a schoolyard bully”
Yikes, someone’s been reading our boards.
Maybe just calling him the “Muzzie Communist” that he is will do some good!
I read this today earlier. I think this is about as accurate as you can get it.
No wonder this guy is avoiding the press.
I’m beginning to think that he may be the easier guy to beat. He’s a throw back to the Louis Armstrong black. He is not someone like Colin Powell, Condi Rice and some other elected black official who have a clear stance on the issues.
I’m listening to Clarence Thomas’s Autobiography. You see exactly where he came from and where he ended up and where he’s going based on his experience as a young black man in the south. He was a black panther follower and just as radical on the issues as anyone, but his views changed once he could see that American blacks and the dem party were screwing over his people by keeping them uneducated and segregated.
“Sitting behind the Resolute desk is a sobering experience that makes foolish campaign promises seem suddenly less binding.”
The Resolute desk would mean nothing to Obama. His loyalty and sympathies are to his African roots, not his European ones. (See the website for Obama’s Trinity United Church of Christ and its Mission Statement.) He wouldn’t revere the Resolute desk. He’s probably piss on it.
This country has spent the last 25 years promoting self-esteem, instead of self-efficacy, respect, rational thought, and consequences of action . Why does it now surprise us that we have a candidate whose only “qualification” is that he makes his followers feel good?
Obama is intentionally hiding his background because it is so foreign from the typical American experience, black or white.
Slogans:
Obama-Too liberal for real America
Obama-Does America Need Another Jimmy Carter?
Omama-Change we can’t afford
Obama-When substance doesn’t matter
Obama-Ignorance will get us all killed
I’m hearing from various dems and independents that they would vote for McCain if he’s up against Obama, but might vote for Hillary if she’s the candidate.
It’s the experience/unknown quantity thing.
100 days of what?
Me too. And I mean dems who have NEVER voted republican.
Interesting phenom. One friend who was a Kerry liberal and is rather an MCP* says Hillary “has a toughness” that Barak lacks.
And then there’s the Bill Clinton factor. He’s a big presence in this campaign and beloved of many Independents.
*Male Chauvinist Pig
Agreed. I was thinking more of the educational system, than the political one.
You got it. And if you want to know what that African loyalty does to a country, have a quick look at South Africa or Zimbabwe. Enjoy. I left South Africa for Europe because I’m a European, not an African. And for Europeans African culture just ain’t fun.
This is a very interesting scenario to say the least. AS has been pointed out here and elsewhere the numbers do NOT add up for her. (please see: http://www.newsweek.com/id/118240)
So what is she going to do?
Obama is a wishy washy liberal sympathizer. He will be every bit as bad as every other liberal that we’ve had in office with foreign policy. And his advisors will be worse.
What gets me has been how quickly the established dems have gone out to back him as the coming Messiah. I’m wondering now if they are wishing they had NOT done that.
I know I don't care what others think about me.
I'll tell you what I did / do / always will like about today's U.S.A. - we no longer "bring a knife to a gun fight."
With you as president, I fear we're going to go back to the old, unsuccessful way of handing the bad guys... giving hugs and trying to understand them... NO THANKS!
