If Mr. McCain is elected, conservatives would certainly have to stay on his back then.

So what is the problem with doing so now?

If McCain is going to be campaigning as a moderate, conservatives showing dissatification with him would seem to be a positive for him, and it would shore up his moderate bonafides.

Exactly, if we get off his back now who will be around to say "We told you so" with a straight face?
