I read a story on a genealogy site which said 2 brothers of my direct ancestor were leaders on the first wagon train to go through Donner Pass after that disaster. I only found it one place years ago and have not been able to find it since. What a dummy I was for not documenting where I found information in my FTM. It seems that siblings of my direct ancestors went west but mine stayed east of the MS River in NC, GA, SC, AL, TN and MS. Most lines were here in the 1600’s and 1700’s.

I have never found out when my ancestors arrived in America, I said it was before the Revolution because the first entry into the family Bible belonging to them was the birth of my great great great ? grandfather in Virginia in 1776. Maybe they were here before then and could be that was just when they got the Bible.

If you're interested, a good book to check into would be George R. Stewart's "The California Trail". From a quick skim of the text, the leader of the first wagon train after the Donner Party would seem to be Charles Hopper, though other groups arrived soon after on his tails.
