I was channel surfing and happened to hit the broadcast just as they were starting to show brief cuts from all 79 previous best piture winners. If the film industry wants to know why they are held in such contempt by so many and why their big broadcast draws so few viewers they have only to rerun that segment. It is a lesson in devolution.
Hollywood’s real problem is its inability to come up with an original story line that resonates with the American people. Most of the successful films over the last few years have been remakes of earlier films (3:10 to Yuma, Stepford Wives, the Pink Panther), adaptations from successful books (Lord of the Rings), resurrections of past franchises (Star Wars prequels and Superman), or take-offs from old television shows and comic books (Dukes of Hazzard and the Fabulous Four). Master and Commander was a recreation of Horatio Hornblower; American Pie contained a whole lot of Porky’s; and Meet The Parents was just another of the “boy meets girlfriend’s family” storylines.
The Oscars at one time was somewhat unique ... today there are award shows on TV practically every other week. The entertainment industry is the most self congratulatory business in America ... in fact award shows have turned into their own business.
Stopped watching years ago around 1999 and glad to see others have also decided the annual celebration of hype over craft is a waste of time...
Hollyweird will blame it on a right wing conspiracy. Oliver Stoned to direct mockumentary about it.
George Cloony to play heroic president of oscar commitee.
Donald Sutherland to play Karl Rove.
Ben Affleck to play TV network producer.
Matt Damon to play head of oscars security.
Julia Roberts to play actress who tries to hold back tears as she is giving acceptance speech after being informed nobody is watching.
The Oscars were on last night?
What a freeking waste of time!I havent watched the AA show since 1972!
Wasn't that the year LOTR swept every category it was nominated for?
It’s such a stupid thing and not at all worth watching as a bunch of narrow-minded people congratulate themselves for their morally impaired work.
The NASCAR race from Fontana, east of Los Angeles got delayed by rain. It finally was suspended at 87 laps and finished today. But- all night long, they kept saying the rain had stopped and they were drying the track and going to run the race. I about wore out my remote control switching back and forth.
Had the race come back on, I would have given it priority.
The people in the stands held fast. Before the rain delays, they were headed for a 2-fer. The 300 mile event on Sat eve got rained out and was scheduled to follow the 500 mile event. That’s alot of entertainment for your ticket.
