Yeah, so-called “Christians” in the middle ages made up all sorts of legends about Jews bleeding children to death, etc. Look around the web for “Little Sir (Saint) Hugh”. Puritans, on the other hand, found them rather “useful”, and so Jews were allowed to return to Britain under Cromwell long after they had been persecuted and driven out by Edward II, IIRC.
Sort of ironic perhaps in that when Christianity was still a cult, the pagan Romans probably accused Christians of similar crimes, partly out of misunderstanding of Christ’s teachings, which were of course based on Judaism.

So called "Puritan" Cromwell persecuted Catholics instead of Jews. I don't think that makes him any more enlightened.
I'll also add that after Britian got tired of the Puritans, they "encouraged" them to move to North America. Not finding any lands they could steal from Catholics, they settled for burning women at the stake.
