"conservatives are to the republican party what blacks are to the democrats"

Catchy. But I think it's religious conservatives they view that way. Because the Religious Right will keep on being ridiculous in their backing of someone just because he's a Christian. Did we learn nothing from Jimmy Carter?

That would explain their support of Huckabee.

Either the religious right is actually comprised of Christian Socialists, or they're just playing identity politics.

You are on to a developing trend and possible realignment. There is a big difference between social conservatives and religious conservatives. I want the religious conservatives in the conservative movement and part of social conservatism. However, many are willing to throw all the principles of social conservatives under the bus. Illegal immigration, higher social spending by the government, and rehabilitation over punishment are some of the issues thrown under this election cycle. If they choose to do that, fine that is their choice, but the are more liberal than McCain in their thinking and eventual direction.

I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they acting desperately due to no strong conservative candidates this election cycle. But, it may not be temporary - they may be moving toward liberalism under a false gospel of more government.

The Christian Right had no other dog in the hunt. Would you have them vote for one of the radical liberal pro-choice, pro-homosexual candidates (Giuliani, Romney), or one of the moderates that took away their voice with CFR (Thompson, McCain)?

Would that they had coalesced around Hunter or Tancredo... But then, the same could be said of the rest of the conservative factions as well. If we had been seeking a Reagan Coalition candidate, that is where we all should have been.
