McCain Says Report on Lobbyist Not True

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- John McCain denied a romantic relationship with a female telecommunications lobbyist on Thursday and said a report by The New York Times suggesting favoritism for her clients is "not true."

"I'm very disappointed in the article. It's not true," the likely Republican presidential nominee said as his wife, Cindy, stood alongside him during a news conference called to address the matter.

McCain described the woman in question, lobbyist Vicki Iseman, as a friend.

The newspaper quoted anonymous aides as saying they had urged McCain and Iseman to stay away from each other prior to his failed presidential campaign in 2000. In its own follow-up story, The Washington Post quoted longtime aide John Weaver, who split with McCain last year, as saying he met with lobbyist Iseman and urged her to steer clear of McCain.

The facts are that McCain was riding on Paxon's aircraft [he mentioned at the Press conference that the rules were different then] and wrote two letters to the FCC pressing them to make a decision on a case before them that involved Paxon. Why were the letters written for this firm? Was it common practice by McCain to write such letters in similar circumstances or was he influenced by the free plane rides and an alleged paramour? McCain was chairman of the Commerce Committee. He had lots of influence. I wonder if McCain did more than just send the two letters, but also, made a few telephone calls?

This may not be damaging to the average politician, but McCain is a reformer who wants to get all special interest money and influence out of politics. He has gotten on his moral high horse many times. He must be held to a higher standard.

If the NYT and the rest of the liberal MSM can find anything that refutes what McCain said during the press conference, he has some serious problems, along with the GOP.

Why aren’t these stories on the FRONT PAGE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES?

He should sue the NYT for slander. This is a smear job. I think she was 32 and him 63 at the time. They are going after anything. Have my suspicions who is behind this also.

“Where’s the proof?”
Some seem quite satisfied with “anonymous sources.” Bet they wouldn’t be if it was their reputation on the line.”

How do explain this on the record meeting:

“In its own follow-up story, The Washington Post quoted longtime aide John Weaver, who split with McCain last year, as saying he met with lobbyist Iseman and urged her to steer clear of McCain.”

Sounds quoted, and factual.

I wonder why McCain didn’t disavow the NYT endorsement article on January 25, 2008 knowing full well they were writing a hatchet piece on him. After all, he hired Bennett in December to spike the story.

Why are their ages relevant? How old was Monica?

Just curious: where do you think Rubert Murdoch and his empire fit into the media mix?

You’re full of horse manure!

Go soak your head!

The NY Times has been caught foisting false allegations - i.e. smear hack job on the fine man!

Wrong again!

McCain was even tempered and rational unlike the NY Slimes.

Perhaps, but the endorsement was brought up during the Rep debates. They asked Giuliani why he didn’t get it and Romney made a humorous remark about its importance. McCain just sat there with a Cheshire cat grin on his face.

Sorry John, you lie down with dogs, you get fleas.

So true. And yes, it is amazing that this kind of revelation is being greeted with shock. Didn’t we all know that the NYT would turn on him as soon as he got the nod?

Don’t we all know that he will continue to look weak and thereby lose the general as he tries to defend himself from the attacks that will continue? He is just not strong enough on so many levels to play this game.

Let’s see affidavits. Folks, I’m not standing up for McCain, I’m just saying we should demand more proof from these KNOWN purveyors of lies (MSM, leftwing talking heads). I want another Republican candidate, a good conservative, and wouldn’t mind something taking this one out of the race—but I want it done with facts, not rumors. It can’t be just a coincidence that of the three current viable candidates, only Hillary seems scandal free. One has an unsourced rumor that he had gay sex and cocaine, another supposedly had an affair with a lobbyist (complete with favors)—and there’s Hillary, all lily-white and saintly. I smell a RAT.

Anyone besides me remember how the Clintons conducted their campaigns in the past?

Says he's "disappointed". I'd be outraged and demand a retraction.

That was, in part, my reaction as well. I also thought "Is that the best he can do?" Not impressed with his Press Conference, he was not convincing at all, nor does he come across as a good speaker. At a time like this, he needs to be both. If he is going to call a press conference to deny a newspaper article, he shouldn't look like he is walking the gang plank of guilt!

This is sleezy, sloppy, unethical tabloid journalism at its best; really cheap amateur tripe.

The NYT quotes “unnamed” former staffers speaking on condition of anonymity to suppose – the NYT’s conclusion - that an affair or improper professional relationship.

Where is the proof?

This is not a new style for the NYT, as we have seen them slime our esteemed General in Iraq and the whole Dan Rather sleezy slime hit job.

Remember the infamous National Guard affair?

I suggest a contest!

How many more people will be fired from the NY rag Times over this shoddy schit?

Blathered on about his service in the military and how he’s never betrayed the public trust. We’ll certainly see how this plays out of the next several days/weeks.

No denial of involvement with the woman. Just saying he never did anything to betray public trust. IMO we just had enough of this garbage with Clinton. For eight years now we have not had to worry about the morals of our President in front of our children.

I just think the best thing for me to do is vote down ticket and forget it.

Well, since government growth is STILL on the rise, fewer Conservatives are running and winning elections, and Americans are even more addicted to big government, literally and emotionally, I would conclude that Murdock and company are just another New York media arm.

FALSE!

Both Mr. and Mrs. McCain denied in many ways and many times that there was no improper relationship.

Go soak your head and puke the vile bile out of your soul!
