WASHINGTON (AP) - A missile launched from a Navy ship successfully struck a dying U.S. spy satellite passing 130 miles over the Pacific on Wednesday, a defense official said. Full details were not immediately available.

It happened just after 10:30 p.m. EST.

Two officials said the missile was launched successfully. One official, who is close to the process, said it hit the target. He said details on the results were not immediately known.

The goal in this first-of-its-kind mission for the Navy was not just to hit the satellite but to obliterate a tank aboard the spacecraft carrying 1,000 pounds of a toxic fuel called hydrazine.

U.S. officials have said the fuel would pose a potential health hazard to humans if it landed in a populated area. Although the odds of that were small even if the Pentagon had chosen not to try to shoot down the satellite, it was determined that it was worth trying to eliminate even that small chance.

Officials said it might take a day or longer to know for sure if the toxic fuel was blown up......"

These weapons are kinetic energy weapons...meaning a direct hit. Hit to kill.

I wonder if it was a direct hit or a proximity burst, and what type of explosive was used. Anybody here an expert on this type of ordnance?

Direct hit. The warhead is non-explosive.

Bravo Zulu Bump - The C.O. is on the fast track for Admiral now - that’s how this stuff works ...

If I got fast tracked every time my ship had a successful missile launch I'd have retired an admiral instead of an O-5.

>China requests the U.S. to fulfill its international obligations in real earnest and provide to the international community necessary information and relevant data in a timely and prompt way so that relevant countries can take precautions.”< (From Breitbart story)

The U.S. will follow the example set by China, following their ASAT destruction of their comm satellite, and release NO DATA.

You know this 08 Campaign is going to be about Money.. and the debate will be whether programs like Strategic missle, the GWOT OIF, OEF etc are worth the cost compared to what Obama will offer in Free Health Insurance, Free College, Free Mortgage payments, Free Debt Relief, etc to constituencies of low income people courtesy of the backs of hard working people...

We can not afford to lose this debate...

The bottom line with enemies in this world trying to kill American citizens what exactly is the cost of Freedom?

Obviously, the Bush Administration completely failed in its diplomacy to reach some sort of an agreement with the satellite. The satellite, like all satellites, is not our enemy. If it wanted to strike us, it was because of our imperialist attitude toward satellites and our lack of tolerance of the satellittic religion.

We need change. Yes, change would have turned that satellite from its course of destruction to one of hope. If we had a leader of hope in the White House we could have gotten along well with the satellite and the satellite, coming to America should not have had to live without healthcare. That satellite, even it got a job pumping gas, would not have been poor because a leader of hope would have raised minimum wage.

The world sat by and hoped the satellite would not strike their house.

The US Navy, under the leadership of GWB, did not sit around and hope. They made a plan. They studied their plan. They knew the plan would work because their entire course has been to develop the means of executing such a plan successfully.

And then they EXECUTED their plan. And, THAT, ladies and gentlemen is what the highest EXECUTIVE office in the world demands: a proven track record of a good, fair vision and a resume of successfully implementing that vision. Not hope. Not filegate. Leadership.

“Proximity fuses” (like Patriot) aren’t effective against a wide variety of munitions, they act to disperse biological and chemical warheads, for instance and have only minimal effect on the trajectory. Kinetic energy weapons try to maximize the change in momentum of the target, and dramatically alter its course, hopefully making it impact thousands of miles from its intended target.

The satellite that was shot down had only the heat signature of the sun’s light reflect on it.

Ahh, that's the source for the heat then. Disucssion on another thread was wondering about all that. Thanks.

How about the crew up for a NUC, MUC, PUC?

How about the WEPS Divo, the WEPS Chief, etc, etc.

CO Fast-tracking for flag? Maybe it will help him some but he’s already been in 25 years. A little late to “fast-track.”
