WASHINGTON (AP) - A missile launched from a Navy ship successfully struck a dying U.S. spy satellite passing 130 miles over the Pacific on Wednesday, a defense official said. Full details were not immediately available.

It happened just after 10:30 p.m. EST.

Two officials said the missile was launched successfully. One official, who is close to the process, said it hit the target. He said details on the results were not immediately known.

The goal in this first-of-its-kind mission for the Navy was not just to hit the satellite but to obliterate a tank aboard the spacecraft carrying 1,000 pounds of a toxic fuel called hydrazine.

U.S. officials have said the fuel would pose a potential health hazard to humans if it landed in a populated area. Although the odds of that were small even if the Pentagon had chosen not to try to shoot down the satellite, it was determined that it was worth trying to eliminate even that small chance.

Officials said it might take a day or longer to know for sure if the toxic fuel was blown up......"

I had that same professor. Several times. I just wrote down everything they said and barfed it back to them come exam time. No problem. Magna cum laude. They think they are so clever. And they think you are clever, too, if you can manage to be an accurate recording and replaying device.

Of course it counts. A friend of mine spent some time there doing “Splash” detection and it seemed like a neat job. We worked together on the Nellis AFR.

Attaboy, Navy. I will sleep better tonight knowing every foreign dictator is put on notice about ever trying to nuke us. But how much did this show of strength cost the American taxpayer? It would have been cheaper to hire a bunch of ambulance chasers to pay off the Bangladeshis when it landed on their chicken coop.

But how much did this show of strength cost the American taxpayer?

10 million. Not much more than a Super Bowl commercial will cost in five years, and well worth the PR and message it sends to our enemies.

"The reporter for ABC Radio emphasized the cost of the missile strike, he was pissed and I luv it!"

Since they were prepared to use up to 3 of those $10 million missiles and hit it the first time, using my ex-wife's logic... it was a 20 million dollar bargain/sale and worth every penny!

The cost could have been realised in 10 years if we let it go. Now maybe 30.
