Bill Clinton: Texas Could Be Hillary's Last Stand Former President Tells Lone Star Crowd Wife Needs Wins in Texas and Ohio By RICK KLEIN and SARAH AMOS
Feb. 20, 2008
There's a Texas-sized stumbling block on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's comeback trail.
Even Clinton's most devoted surrogate -- her husband, Bill Clinton -- acknowledged the do-or-die stakes on Wednesday in Beaumont, Texas, conceding that a loss in Texas or Ohio would likely doom her candidacy.
"If she wins Texas and Ohio I think she will be the nominee; if you don't then I don't think she can. It's all on you," the former president told the audience at the beginning of his speech.
A series of demographic and organizational challenges are coming together to make the Lone Star State an extraordinarily difficult venue for Clinton, with her campaign needing a decisive win to overcome Sen. Barack Obama's growing edge in convention delegates.
With polls showing the race essentially tied, several independent political analysts say that even if Clinton takes an overwhelming share of Latino voters, she will be hard-pressed to carry the state, much less capture a large share of delegates.
And the unique way that Texas awards delegates could force Clinton to take as much as 55 percent of the state's vote just to break even in the battle for delegates, said Richard Murray, director of the University of Houston's Center for Public Policy.
"They've gotten some bad breaks here," Murray said. "Texas is not well set-up for her, and the Obama people have figured that out. It's tough but they've got no choice. They must win down here, and win convincingly."
Must-Win for Clinton

>>>Will these people finally, finally, please, just go away.
If you “have hope”, if you can “believe in change” maybe they will. I’ll make the cake, you bring the coffee.
I hear obama fills 20K stadiums, how big are her venues?
But I thought they were so happily married?
But the charade can end if Hillary meets her political Alamo.
Everyone says he has been a drag and has cost her support. Say what you like, but he’s an excellent politician. How unlike him to mess things up so badly.
My question, and it is a serious one: Do you think he ever wanted her to win in the first place?
Maybe he doesn’t want to be the First Gentleman, with all the scrutiny that brings. Maybe he’d rather give speeches, play golf & see that nice Canadian woman.
If I were Bill, I would seriously consider taking the bus instead of the plane for the next couple of weeks. And I would tell my girlfriend to stop tasting other things and start tasting my food!
LOL!
Beat me too it.
Maybe we could be the Texans at San Jacinto and send her home with a limp.
BTW, stevio, send cash! I also... accept PayPal!
Indeed- it may be!
Especially considering the Teamsters Union is giving Obama their endorsement today- which is pretty amazing.
Cue up the Led Zeppelin!
Clinton administration negotiating skills with Americans...Grim Reminder BUMP!
Many Texans are gonna vote in the democratic primary and vote to Obama just to vote against queen Hillary; and then vote the correct way in November
The sooner Hillary is defeated the better.
Those Texans are GRRRREAT Americans!
Yes we are
>>>Do you think he ever wanted her to win in the first place?
Maybe he did not want a comparison made between her presidency and his. What he did vs. what she did.
Nice try Bill. Hillary must win both with 65% of the delegates just to appoach the pledged delegates Obama has thru the primaries. A rough split in delegates in Texas and Ohio still leaves Hillary about 150 behind Obama in pledged delegates. If the Clinton's try to steal the nomination thru the superdelegates, there will be hell to pay.
Come on, this is the clintons. If hillary doesn’t get the nomination, they will do everything they can to destroy Obama and get Mccain elected just so she can run in 2012. She’ll start the fund raising the day after she concedes.
