The party loyalists knew in their guts that they lost the White House when Romney withdrew. Maybe Romney would have lost too, he had his own problems, but he had a shot of beating Clinton or Obama. McCain is a sure loser.

The anger is misplaced. If we couldn't nominate Thompson (and support for him was overwhelming on FR) we can't lose the election for McCain. It's the far larger number of conservatives that can't stand McCain that will seal his fate.

We just have the bad manners to remind them of this metaphysical certitude.

Yes...all good points. Now about Romney...even though I haven't admitted it yet, he really disappointed me when he stepped out. A buddy of mine suggested that Romney could have struck a "home run", if he had garnered the nomination and then asked Thompson, or Hunter to be his running mate. Part of my "right/wrong...black/white" mentality screams hell no at the thought of it, but then another part of me believes it was definitely worthy of consideration.

But we can't go back there now because Romney withdrew.

I'm going to stop reminding people of what's coming. It serves no real purpose. There's going to be weeping and gnashing of teeth, and I don't suppose I perform any useful function by reminding them of what's going to happen. I suppose it might even be "merciful" to let them go on in their "dream" before it collapses in November of 2008.

I'm just aggravated by people who can't, or won't realize what's going on around them...people who invent their own version of reality, and then try to jam it down my throat. But then again, I don't suppose I have to even be here, so I'm not complaining much. Myself and everybody else brings 90% of everything we "deserve" down upon us. If we're really honest with ourselves, we'll have to admit that not much bad happens to us that we really don't deserve. :-)

One of the best arguments I have against Romney the candidate is the lack of "fire in the belly" demonstrated by his weak-kneed withdrawal. His defenders say he ran the numbers and decided the odds were against him.

One thing we know about our enemy McCain is he's a fighter. He doesn't care about the odds. He will fight against us to his last breath. He will crawl over broken glass to the gates of Hell and beyond if it will help crush conservatism and ruin us forever.

Against that kind of obsession Romney the rational utility calculator didn't stand a chance.
