If you add more RAM you will seldom see either the spinning beach ball on the Mac or the spinning hour glass on pc...since the system no longer needs to use the swapfile on the hard drive as often.

Yes, more RAM always helps. So, here are my two choices:
1) PC - Go to any office supply store ore computer center and pick up some very inexpensive RAM, go home, install it, be back up and running with a faster system. No worries.
2) Apple - Go to a Mac snob store (usually painted in lavendar), talk to a "genius" wearing dockers and the requisite turtle-neck, purchase overpriced RAM (you can buy the cheaper non-Apple brand, but they always warn you to remove it before sending your machine in for servicing since it will void the warranty), go home, your system now runs faster - but you're still cursing yourself because you forgot to drop off your iPhone SO THAT THEY CAN CHANGE THE D*M&ED BATTERY!!!
