(EXCERPT--published 2/16/08)The presumptive Republican presidential nominee, John McCain, swiped today at his two Democratic rivals' efforts on global warming and vowed to fend off pressure from conservatives in the GOP base for him to change his own positions on the issue.
In an interview, the Arizona senator insisted he has shown stronger leadership on the climate issue compared with either of the Democratic candidates, Sens. Barack Obama of Illinois and Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.
"They've never proposed any legislation," McCain said. "They've never been involved in any discussion or debate on that issue that I know of. I've been in a leadership role. That's dramatically different."
McCain's comments about the Democrats' global warming positions came less than an hour after he won endorsements from three top House Republicans, Minority Leader John Boenher of Ohio, Minority Whip Roy Blunt of Missouri and conference Chairman Adam Putnam of Florida.
The three lawmakers' positions on climate policy differ starkly from McCain's, but the senator insisted public opinion is behind him and that he would not be swayed to change his own stance.
