Conservatives can trust Huckabee
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ^ | 2-16-2008 | Tim Dotson

Mike Huckabee is the choice of conservatives.

On fiscal conservatism, he believes wholeheartedly in the reduction of cost to the taxpayer, especially entitlements. In Arkansas as governor, he was able to reduce welfare rolls by 50% and he held the line on taxes, leaving them the same as when he took office. He successfully fought to increase deductions and lower taxes such as capital gains. He also signed the Americans for Tax Reform's pledge to not raise taxes.

Huckabee understands that money spent on entitlements is almost three times the amount of spending on the military. Thomas Jefferson said, "The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not." By working to reduce those who are dependent on entitlements, we strengthen our economy and our nation.

On conservative foreign policy, Huckabee vows to finish the war in Iraq, leaving when democracy has been established. He is fervent about removing our dependency on foreign oil by increasing our production at home for the short term and investing in renewable energy for the long term. He also is committed to securing the borders and ending the cycle of illegal immigration, which has become such a huge problem for the United States today.

Huckabee is the only candidate I completely trust to support our Second Amendment rights, as he has a longstanding track record as a sportsman and conservationist. For hunters and shooters of all sports, and those who believe they have the right to own a firearm, Huckabee is the only choice.

On moral conservatism, he is the only candidate who is firmly and unequivocally pro-life. He also wants marriage defined as a union between a man and a woman, and he successfully implemented a law stating that in Arkansas.

For members of the working class who are tired of having a large portion of their paycheck go to support those who will not work or are here illegally, to sportsmen who are tired of losing their rights, to Christians who are tired of seeing their values and beliefs represented as something to be shunned and to those who truly believe in democracy, there is an action you can take.

You can vote for Mike Huckabee.

I do like the look of the Jeff Sessions immigration plan.

It’s a good deal better than anything from the McCain camp I’ve seen.

The only thing conservative about Mike Huckabee is he is pro-life, but so is McCain.

the real record on Huckabees tax and spend policies.
(airborne, don’t be fooled by campaign promises, Huckster calls anti illegal crowd “unchristian and racist”...check out the above posts on his illegal immigration record.

...and here is his fiscal record...

“One of the governor’s biggest weaknesses is his record in Arkansas. While Huckabee did cut taxes during the early years of his tenure, the fact remains that he had a net tax increase under his watch, and the increase in Government size is terrifying. 21 tax increases went into effect, increasing tax revenue by almost $890 million under Governor Huckabee. These increases include the income tax, the sales tax, a cigarette tax, and a gas tax. Not only did he raise taxes, spending “more than doubled under Huckabee. “During Huckabee’s 10 years as governor, state spending more than doubled, from $6.6 billion to $16.1 billion in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2006

It would appear that one of these posts is not correct.

I doubt McCain would pick Jeff Sessions out of the blue, for VP. ;-`

As I’ve said elsewhere, Arkansas’ budget grew for numerous reasons, out of the control of a conservative governor (federal offloading of welfare burdens, federal unfunded mandates, necessary infrasctructure refurbishment, court-ordered educational budget change, balanced budget constitution, etc.).

Nearly all states faced this kind of budget busting in the last ten years. Arkansas grew at a significantly slower rate than most other states, however. And, according to varous measurements, the actual rate of taxes stayed the same, or perhaps increased by about 1%, etc. During this time, the GOP reigns in many states flamed out for reasons including rapid budget expansion.

The “tax burden” growth in Arkansas cited by the “Club for Growth” 527 attack group (funded by Romney supporters) was really an increase in revenue, afforded by a very strong growth of the Arkansas economy, leading to a Huckabee-endorsed elimination of food taxation.

Mike Huckabee did a great job, as the article of this thread alludes. Alas, due to all the misguided-to-slanderous work of “conservatives,” in this primary season, such correction has to be pointed out over and over.

The real stink would come if people like rbmillerjr and about a dozen others (a number of them the “usual suspects” who have carped in this thread) in FR keep posting the garbage for some poor reason.

The Club for Growth is a well respected conservative bona fide for lower taxes and lower govt regulation...Only Big Government Evangelicals like yourself and other Huckabiites conser that group and attack group.

BTw, your rationalization is lame for increasing taxes ...
1. During this period I lived in Maryland, where our Gov. at the time did not increase income taxes. Other states also did not inc. taxes.
2. The fact that Huckster increased spending dramatically also rules out the need for tax increases...all he had to do was not increase spending so much.

For 10 years, as governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee supported amnesty and taxpayer-financed welfare and health care for illegal aliens and increased taxes numerous times. Now, after sniffing the political winds, he poses as tough on illegal aliens and a tax-whacker.

His recent conversion has inspired many evangelical Christians to flock to his support, as they did to President Jimmy Carter in 1976—with disastrous results. Many are unaware that Huckabee’s record betrays his new-found words.

Huckabee even supported taxpayer-funded scholarships for illegal aliens.

He likes to point out that as governor he cut taxes some 90 times. What he doesn’t say, however, is that he also raised more than 20 different taxes for a net tax hike during his tenure of about $500 million. He also left it to his successor – Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe – to cut the state’s hated sales tax, which Mr. Beebe did shortly after taking office.

When pressed Mr. Huckabee on his tax record a few months ago, he said he ‘won’t apologize’ for raising taxes because he needed the money to repair his state’s decrepit highways. Fresh asphalt always seems to appeal to elected officials – especially those who love earmarking federal highway funds. But it’s not something that will win over fiscal conservatives.”...

Huckabee is proposing extending eligibility for state-funded college scholarships to illegal aliens who graduate from Arkansas high schools.

Imposed an income tax surcharge of 3 percent on tax liabilities of individuals and domestic and foreign corporations (Act 38, 1st special session of 2003). (It was temporary until revenues improved. The legislature repealed it in 2005.)

Increased the sales tax by 1/8 of one percent by initiated act (but it was a personal campaign by Huckabee, who campaigned across the state for it and took a celebrated bass boat trip for 4 days down the Arkansas River holding press conferences in each river city to urge passage of the act)

Increased the sales tax by one-half of 1 percent (Act 1492 of 1999)

Increased the sales tax by 7/8ths of 1 percent and expand the sales tax to many services previously exempt from the tax (Act 107, 2nd special session of 2003)

Collected a 2 percent tax on chewing tobacco, cigars, package tobacco, cigarette papers and snuff (Act 434 of 1997)

Levied an additional excise tax of 7 percent on tobacco (Act 38 of 1st special session of 2003) Increased the tax on cigarette and tobacco permits (Act 1337 of 1997)

Increased the tax on cigarette and tobacco – cigarettes by $1.25 per thousand cigarettes and 2 percent of the manufacturers? selling price on tobacco products (Act 434 of 1997)

Increased the tax on cigarettes by 25 cents a pack (Act 38, 1st special session of 2003)

Levied a 3 percent excise tax on all retail sales of beer (Act 1841 of 2001 and extended by Act 272 of 2003 and Act 2188 of 2005)

Revived the 4 percent mixed drink tax of 1989 and added a 4 percent tax on private clubs (Act 1274 of 2005)

Increased the tax on gasoline by 3 cents a gallon (Act 1028 of 1999)

Increased the tax on diesel by 4 cents a gallon (Act 1028 of 1999) Note: Contrary to what Huckabee has said repeatedly in debates, speeches and TV shows, the 1999 gasoline and diesel taxes were not submitted to the voters and approved by 80 per cent of them. ?

Increased the driver’s license by $6 a person, from $14 to $20 (Act 1500 of 2001)

There is more information on Huckabee and I’m willing to bet you have read some if not all of his liabilities.

A true Christian does not believe in more taxes like Mr.Huckabee.

I live in the south and have a Souther Baptist Minister in my family. You will never hear him say Huckabee can be trusted, nor any other Souther Baptist in my area.

And that makes it all the more disgraceful, that they stooped to deceptive attacks as shills for Romney, funded by his supporters.

1. Maryland taxes were likely so high to begin with, that they didn't need to raise them.
2. Of course spending increased. I described how infrastructure refurbishment, court-ordered educational funding changes to an equitable statewide basis, the shifting of welfare burdens to states, plus other federal mandates cause the budget to increase. And Arkansas is constitutionally required to balance budgets.

For some of these children, who passed stringent scholastic requirements while seeking citizenship -- to allow them to contribute in society along with the other children in the state who had those scholarships and met the academic criteria.

The "tax burden" was barely raised, to meet the budget problems faced by Arkansas. "Revenues" are what you are talking about and they went up dramatically, due for the overwhelming part to the burgeoning of Arkansas' economy under Huckabee.

Every poll taken shows that Huckabee is favored strongly by Bible believing, church attending Christians. You could live in a very peculiar area, but I doubt it.
