We're not talking about the convention. We're talking about over 6 months prior to the convention! That's not appropriate.
If you're still confused, the Republican Party still has more than 6 months to get rid of McCain (during the primary season). That's also appropriate.
The country was not under danger of terrorism on our own soil with a Dem party that doesn't even want to pass the surveillance bill. The country was not in war with Al Queda, with our soldiers in Iraq.
If that had been true then, Reagan would surely have acted sooner. He was a great man for his country first. Mitt has done the right thing.
Further, there is a huge difference between 1976 and 2008 -- we are at war:
"Even though we face an uphill fight, I know that many in this room are fully behind my campaign. You are with me all the way to the convention. Fight on, just like Ronald Reagan did in 1976. But there is an important difference from 1976: today, we are a nation at war.
"And Barack and Hillary have made their intentions clear regarding Iraq and the war on terror. They would retreat and declare defeat. And the consequence of that would be devastating. It would mean attacks on America, launched from safe havens that make Afghanistan under the Taliban look like child's play. About this, I have no doubt.
"I disagree with Senator McCain on a number of issues, as you know. But I agree with him on doing whatever it takes to be successful in Iraq, on finding and executing Osama bin Laden, and on eliminating Al Qaeda and terror. If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror. ~~ Mitt Romney, CPAC speech, February 7, 2008

Who are you to tell candidates when they can and cannot endorse?
Romney has withdrawn and he wants to support the frontrunner because he thinks it is important to close ranks and gear up for the general election.
“If you’re still confused, the Republican Party still has more than 6 months to get rid of McCain (during the primary season).”
33 states have voted, 3 more next Tuesday. The election is more than half over and McCain has won the most votes. The #2 guy was the writing on the wall and is supporting the #1 guy. All the rest are mathematically excluded from winning.
