Mormonism Didn't Sink Romney

Snip Let us not forget that Romney snapped his fingers before the election and decided to become a conservative by switching his positions on a litany of key issues, even though his past record was moderate. There were endless gaffes throughout the campaign in which he reinforced the well-earned perception that he would say anything to get elected--from describing himself as a lifelong hunter even though he had hunted only twice, for saying he watched his father march with MLK, for claiming an endorsement of the NRA he never received, etc.

He also failed to emotionally connect with voters. I would go to Romney speeches all year, and talk to audience members after who would tell me they agreed with what he said, but he was "too slick" and "too packaged." It never ceased to amaze me how emotionally tone deaf he was as a candidate, most notable was when he said his sons were serving their country by working to get him elected. I went to a townhall meeting just days before the New Hampshire primary in which a woman said her 26-year old cousin had been paralyzed in a rugby accident, and she asked Romney for his position on stem cell research. Romney responded, "Great, thank you for the question" and he went on with a textbook answer about pluripotent cells without offering any sympathy. Romney's checklist conservatism appealed to desperate conservatives on a cerebral level, but he never reached people emotionally as Huckabee and McCain did. If you want to know why McCain beat Romney, look no further than the final debate between them at the Reagan Library. When they were asked why Reagan would endorse them, Romney recited a laundry list of issues on which Reagan would have agreed with him, while McCain

“Also, the most taboo subject on which Romney stood out from the Pubbie pack was health care. This will be a forefront issue, like it or not, and Romney far and away had the best grasp of the issue and the best plan.”

Yes, Mitt had the best plan.

Others just don’t want to acknowledge that.

It’s plain as day, Mike Huckabee waged a religious war and won. Period.

But not the end of the story.

He never proposed a bailout of the industry. He proposed increased government funding for research and development. There’s nothing wrong with that, nor anything inconsistent with conservatism.

yes it is wrong. There’s a difference between basic research vs research that specifically helps corporations. That’s corporate welfare. They should pay for their own research.

“Go over to DU where you belong.”

Not up to you to tell him where to go - he has every right in the world to be on this site. You are tiresome!

"Because of bigots, we will lose in the fall, Romney was the only chance to win. I will vote Republican for every office except president, which I will vote dem like Ann Coulter."

Fred had a real chance, but Romney never did. Romney never could have beaten either Hillary or Obama. I hope we can all muster support for John McCain, because, right now Obama has some scary superb chances at becoming our next President. There's no way I could ever vote for a Democrat.

Also, conservatives (myself included) waited until it was too late to get behind Romney. None of the radio talk show hosts endorsed Romney until McCain started winning primaries. Nobody thought McCain had a chance of getting the Republican nomination and instead, they all went after Giuliani.

You are not seriously comparing MR to GW?

Oh, by the way we are all bigots about something.

It does not matter how much you yell it out MR lost because of his political history.

The media nominated McCain. The NYT and all the RHINO’s came out to endorse him. The media refused to highlight Mitt’s plans. Instead they umped on the Mormon bandwagon. Huckabee that backslidden Baptist could hide his contempt for Mormonism and the NYT capitalized on that by offering an interview to the Huckster - KNOWING that Mike would highlight his bigotry to the press - Mike was a useful idiot for the NYT. McCain is VERY LEFT so the media was soft on him. The media wants the obomination to win so they are being tough on Hitlery. The stupid sheeple allow the LIBERAL media to shape their views and who they vote for - they don’t check out the facts. So all we have LEFT are DEMONCRATS, running for the WH - McCain and the Obomination will probably get the nominations. Even if the Huckster had a “miracle” and won and Hitlery won the nomination - you’d still have two DEMONCRATS in the WH - oops the Hickster would take verses out of context to push socialism.

He also failed to emotionally connect with voters.

Yup. He looked like he was central casting. Too good to be true.

I am a dyed-in-the-wool evangelical, but would have voted for him in a minute if he had won the nomination. I voted Thompson in the primary here in MI, would have voted Romney in the general without having to hold my nose.

Now I'm faced with the dilemma of having to pull the lever for mclame. Not sure I'll be able to do it.

Religion has NOTHING to do with my decision.

I'd let a Mormon fix my car if he was the better mechanic, why wouldn't I apply the same standard when choosing a president?

I honestly don't want mclame, hillary! or obama as POTUS.

None of the arguments hold water about mclame being the only reasonable option for me.

I DON"T like mclame, and I don't want to vote for him.

I DON'T like hillary, and I WON"T vote for her. I WILL campaign against her.

I DO like obama, but I WON'T vote for him

I DON'T want mclame or hillary! in my living room for the next 4 years. I'll be throwing things and screaming at the TV.

The linguine-spined pubbies in the House and SINate will roll over either way and give the RATS what they want They did that when they were in the minority, and in the majority. I think Rush is right, we need to do some HOUSE cleaning, and some SINate cleaning.

Why should I pull the lever for mclame?

His nominees for the SC would not move the court to the right. Squishy moderate choices would be the most he could nominate and get approved, and we all know where they would side when push comes to shove.

One thing for sure, Romney looked like the gracious grown-up. Huckabee looks like the immature loser, heading down to the Cayman Islands for his “paid speech” hocking his paperback book, I’m not getting out of the race because I’m a believer of miracles bumpkin he is.

I was too. I voted for Forbes in the first time i ever voted in a primary. And I remembered the ad that Romney took out against Forbes back in 96. So yeah I have a major problem with the idea of romney as a fiscal conservative. And you can understand why forbes endorsed mcCain over Romney.

The average Democrat in Arkansas is several degrees to the right of the average Republican in Massachusetts.

Even then, as unbalanced as the legislature is in Arkansas (75-25 in the house, 27-8 in the senate), it is even more unbalanced in Massachusetts (138-19 in the house, 35-5 in the senate).

Romney switched on one major issue. That's it.

Why do you people keeping lying when your lies have been debunked over and over and over?!?

Immigration isn't a major issue?

The Second Amendment?

First Amendment campaign finance restrictions?

Romney's Global Warming nonsense?

All Romney's divergent statements on foreign policy?

McCain is no friend of mine.

We are VERY choosy on who our friends are and he isn’t one of them. He can go butter up someone else that might feel complimented by that slander.

The point is valid, and one that was CONSTANTLY obfuscated if not outright ignored by his supporters. Some of his more adamant supporters here on FR would insist that, if his Kerry-esque FLIP-FLOPPING were pointed out, then that person MUST be an anti-Mormon bigot.

A new myth is developing. We are being told that people objected to the flip-flopping and were called bigots. That is not what people were pointing to and accusing bigotry. It was the rants about how terrible Mormonism was. "They are not Christian They are a cult. They have many Gods. They wear magic underwear. They were racists before 1978. And on and on." That was the bigotry, not the discussions of flip-flopping.

The problem of the discussion of flip-flopping was that many of the claims were lies, distortions and exaggerations.
