Mormonism Didn't Sink Romney
AmericanSpectator ^ | 2/14/2008 | Philip Klein

Snip Let us not forget that Romney snapped his fingers before the election and decided to become a conservative by switching his positions on a litany of key issues, even though his past record was moderate. There were endless gaffes throughout the campaign in which he reinforced the well-earned perception that he would say anything to get elected--from describing himself as a lifelong hunter even though he had hunted only twice, for saying he watched his father march with MLK, for claiming an endorsement of the NRA he never received, etc.

He also failed to emotionally connect with voters. I would go to Romney speeches all year, and talk to audience members after who would tell me they agreed with what he said, but he was "too slick" and "too packaged." It never ceased to amaze me how emotionally tone deaf he was as a candidate, most notable was when he said his sons were serving their country by working to get him elected. I went to a townhall meeting just days before the New Hampshire primary in which a woman said her 26-year old cousin had been paralyzed in a rugby accident, and she asked Romney for his position on stem cell research. Romney responded, "Great, thank you for the question" and he went on with a textbook answer about pluripotent cells without offering any sympathy. Romney's checklist conservatism appealed to desperate conservatives on a cerebral level, but he never reached people emotionally as Huckabee and McCain did. If you want to know why McCain beat Romney, look no further than the final debate between them at the Reagan Library. When they were asked why Reagan would endorse them, Romney recited a laundry list of issues on which Reagan would have agreed with him, while McCain

Spare me the smiley face, you loon.

You imply that I get sexually excited by posting stuff about Romney.

It takes a pretty sick mind to think like that. And I do mean sick.

You pretend to be such a good person, your faith is so important then you go and pull a stunt like that. Have you no shame?

I hit abuse but its still there. I sure as hell don’t know why.

If you really think that this is political and contempt you are expressing and has nothing to do with what you are implying!

What parts of the country did Romney do well in?

#2 - States the Mitt & his family lived in for years.

Like NH? They have a vacation home there. He lost NH...

Yeah, I know -- that was pretty pathetic.

Although Mitt underperformed in the Massachusetts area generally, probably because those folks knew a lot more about Mitt's shameful history and suffered from the decisions in his single term as governor than people elsewhere who believed what Mitt put in his ads.

“False. Fees are not taxes. Fees are prices charged for government services that only benefit a segment of the population. Romney believes, as do most conservatives, that users of such governments services ought to pay the cost of those services.”

Yes, those folks who actually wanted to start a business in MA and form an LLC now are charged $500 a year for that privilege...

The intolerance and vitriol of some FR posters and Huckabee mormonphobes is self-evident and has been -- the cut and paste queens, the snarly victims who escaped the awful claws of the "cult", the all-knowing who quoted and misquoted geezers from over 150 years ago, the frenzied attack squad who with Christian "love" hacked away at Romney's faith in condescending meanness.

No vitriol THERE, eh, EO?

They're the ones who now claim with wide-eyed innocence that Romney's mormonism had nothing to do with losing votes to the preacher man and that well, gosh, we're all bigots.

And the mormon defenders claim with wide-eyed innocence that they are the "victims" and never "hacked away in condescending meanness" as YOUR post and the following post illustrate:

I concur with your post and appreciate your thoughts. You are right, some “very sick puppies” are being exposed here. They are so far gone that they think they are on God’s errand.

This is the same spirit that we see on the other side of the world, the Jihadists. We too have fundamentailst who think they must do God’s work by destroying the “enemy.” Ours too attack from the shadows and won’t identify themselves. That is, they know they are doing dirty work, so they won’t say what church or religion they represent. However, by the details of their posts, we know they are fundamentalist Evangelicals. They are like the "sons of thunder" who wanted to bring down fire onto a city, to whom Jesus said, "Ye know not what spirit ye are of."

Their activities on these threads accomplish two valuable things, however. They give Mormons and many others a chance to show their reasonableness compared to this antagonistic spirit. And second, it serves to demonstrate to us what we must never allow into the oval office, a narrow minded, intolerant, antagonistic, fundamentalist Evangelical.

Such REASONABLENESS !! Quote: "This is the same spirit that we see on the other side of the world, the Jihadists."

If anyone believes this debate has been as one-sided as the mormon defenders claim, just go back and read some of the threads.

the snarly victims who escaped the awful claws of the "cult"

I suppose they are talking about us since we are some of the ex-cult members here at FR. And I also suppose that the poster is a current member.

I've been labled full of hate and bigotry, I've been called weak-willed, over-emotional, and a liar. I have repeatedly challenged anyone to link to a post of mine that is "hateful," but not one time ever, has anyone responded to my request. However, I can link to multiple personal attacks upon me. It is easy to shrug them off, I was once at a place where these people are, I understand.

Please someone link me to my posts where I attack another Freeper personally. Please, and I will rectify it.

I would think he was referring to someone from the Mormon side of the debate (you know who I mean)? But then I guess the nasty invectives must have only been meant for our side.

By the way, I LOVE the cut and pastes, and I use them often.

Romney ran ads, put out robo-calls with the popular Sen. DeMint’s voice, did a lot of on the ground work in S. Carolina. He didn’t give up on S. Carolina at all. He just siphoned enough votes from Huckabee and Thompson to run Thompson out of the race and really get the McCain train rolling. It’s like saying Guilianni focused only on Florida (Guilianni spent 2 million in NH . . . he just lost).

quoted and misquoted geezers from over 150 years ago>

Do those geezers include Joseph Smith and Brigham Young?

If so, is it wrong to cite them as authorities on the teachings of the Mormon Church? If not, what did they say that no longer applies and who speaks for the Mormon faith?

Also, can you please provide me with one or more examples where I have either misquoted those gentlemen or perhaps taken their statements out of context.

Without lowering myself further into condescending meanness, I would like to issue the appropriate corrections on this forum and publicly apologize for my mistakes.

Thanks.

That’s just it, he DID take a position on the Bush tax cuts.

That is simply not true. I defy you to back up your false charge.

Yes, he bought them. :-)

They supported him before he gave them a dime.

And I am frankly insulted at your baseless accusation. I have personal friends who are board members of Massachusetts Citizens for Life. I worked closely with some of them as an officer in MIT pro-life back when I was in grad school. They are some of the most dedicated an moral people I have ever met, and I'd bet they've done more for the pro-life cause in a single minute than you've done your entire life. For you, without any evidence, and without having ever met them, to impugn their character in this way is beyond repugnant.

This kind of thing does not belong on this forum.

I looked and looked at various places documenting all of Romney's fee increases, and I saw no mention of an increase in the business registration fee or incorporation fee.

Please provide a source to back up your claim. Otherwsie, I'll add your accusation to the long list of falsehoods made up by the Romney haters.
