When all you’ve got is a finger to stick in the dike, that’s all you’ve got. If the use of your finger works until real repairs can be made, and if that alone keeps the dike from breaking, well, so be it.

And some dikes/parties reach a point where repair is no longer feasible. You evacuate the area and rebuild. ;-)
