( Archbishop of Canterbury ) Williams hits back in sharia row
Press Association ^ | Feb 8, 2008

The Archbishop of Canterbury will try to put aside the row over sharia law as he makes his first public appearance since the controversy erupted.

Dr Rowan Williams hit back on Friday night over criticism of his comments amid growing calls for his resignation.

He made no proposals for sharia, and "certainly did not call for its introduction as some kind of parallel jurisdiction to the civil law...

his core aim was "to tease out some of the broader issues around the rights of religious groups within a secular state".

At least two Synod members have already called for Dr Williams to go ...

Colonel Edward Armitstead, a Synod member ..."One wants to be charitable, but I sense that he would be far happier in a university where he can kick around these sorts of ideas."

And Alison Ruoff, a Synod member ...: "He is a disaster for the Church of England. He vacillates, he is a weak leader and he does not stand up for the Church. I would like to see him resign and go back to academia."

I've heard that this man is brilliant.

Having read some of his equivocations on the TEC/ECUSA meltdown, I can say he elevates obfuscation into a fine art. If that's brilliance, then he's a genuine egghead.

from your link: He said the Church of England was allowed to operate its own courts, as were Orthodox Jews, and the anti-abortion views of Roman Catholics and other Christians were taken account of within the law.

so lets' be fair to muslims and allow homosexuals to be thrown off the roof of tall buildings...women to be buried up to their shoulders and stoned to death for adultery (attested to by four male witnesses!)

This jerk isn't a human being, he's a walking talking dickwit. I'll take bets on it - he's never read the koran or any of the hadith and he's certainly never read THE LIFE OF MUHAMMAD written by Edward, Canon Sell.

I'm not too fond of that particular figure of speech.

Although it might be particularly appropriate here.

Needless to say, you won’t find me agreeing with your characterization of the Druid High Priest. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/2172918.stm

I've heard that this man is brilliant.

Well . . . that depends on how you define 'brilliant'. If by that you mean 'academic with pointy head full of obscure useless knowledge with which he can obfuscate at will', I'll agree with you.

He's a typical intellectual who knows more and more about less and less. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way he abandoned common sense and even the human instinct for mere survival. He's a hothouse plant that can only flourish where others do the heavy lifting.

I can live without that sort of 'brilliant'. That's why I am no longer an Anglican.

Don’t kid yourself. Henry was appeasing the noblemen of his day who resented the fact that Rome actually owned England. He was no religious reformer.

Colonel Edward Armitstead, a Synod member ..."One wants to be charitable, but I sense that he would be far happier in a university where he can kick around these sorts of ideas."

Indeed. It's the duty of a bishop to stand for the truth, and Williams is either incapable or unwilling to do that. A university is the perfect venue to kick ideas around. Unfortunately, they never seem to kick around any sane ones anymore, so this one would fit right in.

The more I look at the Head Druid of my former denomination, the more I’m glad I left it. Bozo the Clown would have been a better Archbishop of Canterbury.
