There is NOTHING conservative about working with the Democratic nominee against most of your fellow conservatives in order to grow government, socialize medicine, lose the war in Iraq, tilt the Supreme Court to the Left, and make Roe v. Wade the permanent law of the land. If you are conservative and vote for the Democratic nominee or even just refuse to vote for McCain, who is by any and every objective standard, considerably more conservative than either of them, let me tell you what you are NOT doing,
* You are NOT doing the logical thing. When faced with a choice between a moderate who holds some conservative positions and some non-conservative positions and a liberal who holds no conservative positions, the logical decision is to take the moderate. After all, half a loaf is better than none.
* You are NOT helping conservatism or your fellow conservatives. To the contrary, you are helping liberals defeat conservative ideas. Isn't that what conservatives are saying that they're furious at McCain over? Well, who's less of a conservative: John McCain, who, if he were in the White House, would help conservatives win some battles and would help liberals win others or the conservatives who want to help a Democrat get into the office who will go against conservative ideas every time?
* You are NOT looking out for the best interests of the country. If you believe winning in Iraq is better than losing, if you believe balancing the budget is better than higher deficit spending, if you believe that having a Supreme Court that is tilted to the right is better than having a Supreme Court tilted to the left, and if you believe that Roe v. Wade is leading to the immoral murder of millions of children -- and the overwhelming majority of people reading this column certainly believe all those things -- then you are certainly not putting the good of the country first if you oppose John McCain in November.
You nailed it.
He has a simple choice - either ruin the Conservative chances at the Presidency because of his ambition and personal ego, or do the honorable thing (much like this author is urging us to do but without the rape of Conservative principles that he wishes us to indulge in) and step aside for a true conservative.
It is up to Senator McCain to do the honorable thing - it is a simple choice between raw personal ambition and a simple, honorable act for the good of the country.
It is in your court, Senator McCain.

You know, you McCain boosters would do well to just sit back and give people a chance to come to terms with this. If you keep hitting conservatives with this “vote for McCain and like it” crap, you’re going to win about zero converts.
The Republican party has been drifting left lately. Heck it is difficult to tell the difference between Bush and Democrats.

I’m glad my precinct switched to touch screens - I’ve been holding my nose in the voting booth alot lately. Looks like more of the same ahead.
There is NOTHING American about voting for someone not out of conscience but out of brand loyalty.
Right now we are trying to pull the political pendulum farther to the right. We are losing the struggle and its slipping from our grip.
If we vote for the dems we give the pendulum a shove to the left. When it comes back from the inevitable backlash it will come back farther right than it is now. We need to be prepared to hold it the next time around.

You’ve hit the nail right on the head. After getting shafted by a GOP majority in the Senate and HOuse for 12 long, miserable years, you would think Hawkins and the other kowtowers would finally awaken to the fact that for far too long we have let conservative votes produce liberal victories.
Nope. Not this time. When someone tells me for 20 years to “Get lost!” in the most derisive and intemperate manner possible, it’s only right to honor his insistence.
Again, if it’s McCain vs Obama — sure, I’ll hold my nose and let the sleazy liar serve his single term. I’m not quite ready for Hotel Rwanda, American style, thank you. But, if it’s McCain vs Hillary, bring on the b****h and unleash the dogs of war!

I agree. I would rather see the Republican Party suffer defeat, and either Dem get elected, and then show the country just what a failure their ideas are. Hopefully, this would lead to a rebirth of the Republican Party as the true conservative party it should be.
Yes, I know all about the appointment of judges, and the raising of taxes, ane ...... But this country has survived for over 200 years, and will, if necessary, survive Hillary or Obama. In the long run the outcome for this country will be better if conservative principles can rise again. Electing McPain only prolongs the demise of the Republican PArty.
The ONLY way I would vote for McPain is if he gets a VP like Romney or Fred Thompson or someone similar. Then since McPain will probably keel over in his first term, a good conservative could replace him.

because it won’t be worth much after Hillary or Obama have been through messing the economy and they’ll tax the rest.
Now that the McCain people have ignored common sense themselves they pull out this drivel masquerading as common sense as some rationale for avoiding the consequences of the mistake they brought on themselves. They have won the battle but will most certainly lose the war.

I do agree that backing off for awhile probably will help. I intend to hold my nose and vote for the non-HillObama guy, but there is still a lot of anger, and it will take time to have any chance at rapproachment. Pushing too hard (for McCain), too soon, may only make skeptics “dig in” and solidify their pledges never to vote for him.

one question. would you prefer 16 years of boderline socialist administration under the guise of conservatism, or four years of socialism spoken right out with a chance of a true conservative replacment in 4 years?
take mccain, unless he steps down we’ll have to vote for him again in four years. then his veep. prolly a pro-life southern nanny-stater like huck. so then we end up having to vote for that. if he wins, we got him again.
until the GOP loses the white house, we likely won’t have a chance to get a real conservative in office for 16 years- that’s IF we continue to win with the likes of mccain.
i haven’t decided yet.
