I think you will find that their thought process evolved after some further discussion. Here is an account of a later meeting.

Dobson is NOT a good judge of people, because one of his earlier bigtime proteges was the very reverand Ted Haggard.
Thanks, I had not heard of that meeting. WND had a piece only a month prior, which had shaped my opinion:

Thanks for the dialogue!
Most in the room supported Mike Huckabee. A few important figures supported Duncan Hunter.
I think Dobson wanted to support Duncan Hunter, but deferred to the other people in the meeting that supported Huckabee.
The majority wanted to support one of their own, a Baptist minister. You can see how that is treated among non-religious conservatives right here on FR. I think the people at the meeting that supported Duncan Hunter recognized this.
Dobson’s voice carries a lot of weight, as you know. Had Dobson made note on his show that he was supporting a candidate, 100,000 listeners would have gone to their home church and said “What are your thoughts on ______?” Within 2 months over a million people would have been talking about that candidate, within 6 months several million. His voice has that much clout, IMO. If you do not believe that, remember Terry Schiavo. Only a handful of people started that groundswell, yet it was a top news story for quite some time.
Had Dobson backed Hunter, whom I admire, as far back as summer, he would have surpassed Huck. I was a Huckster before I learned about Hunter. Huck was given a great wave to ride, but blew his chances. I had signed up on his website to be active locally, giving my freshly new cell phone number as a contact number. It took less than a month to receive requests for donations to conservative causes, yet never heard a word from the Huck campaign. I felt betrayed that my number had been sold, which brought me to Hunter. I was never even contacted when Huck came to town, at least not by his people.
With Hunter dropping out and throwing his support behind Huck, I would have joined him, with hesitation, yet my vote had to become strategic, trying to thwart McCain. Sadly it was too late, all this done in vain.
Now I am left with two choices to embrace: “Viva Mejico!” or “Si se puede.”
